We found that among adolescent victim-survivors of sexual extortion, boys were more likely to be targeted by offenders demanding money, and girls more likely to be targeted for intimate/sexual images
AIC@AICriminology

In a joint @eSafetyOffice and #AICResearch paper released today, more than one in 10 adolescents had experienced sexual extortion in their lifetime (11.3%), and one in 3 victims had experienced it more than once. Read more in the #TrendsAndIssues report bit.ly/3PK00n3

@AIC and @eSafetyOffice surveyed a sample of Australian adolescents, finding that more than one in 10 had been sexually extorted, mostly when they were under 18 - of these, 41% had been sexually extorted using digitally manipulated material: aic.gov.au/publications/t…

This rapid evidence assessment examined how AI can be used to detect or investigate child sexual abuse material or child sexual offenders
AIC@AICriminology

New #AICResearch describes how AI can be used to assess the malicious use of this technology for prevention and disruption of CSA. Learn more in our #TrendsAndIssues report bit.ly/4afIi4s

Many law enforcement agencies are considering more efficient ways to process CSAM in investigations - this paper gives a really good overview of the benefits and risks of using cloud-based infrastructure to do so
AIC@AICriminology

In our #TrendsAndIssues report released today, we examine how software developments can automate the processing of CSAM evidence and provide quantifiable scalability, including the transition to cloud-based infrastructure. bit.ly/3MTURYe #AICResearch

This study found that accidental exposure to CSAM led to subsequent intentional viewing in 44% of respondents, pointing to a crucial need to remove CSAM from online platforms and prevent accidental exposure: doi.org/10.1016/j.chia…

Meta has done child sex offenders a favour by moving to default end-to-end encryption on Facebook & Messenger, allowing offenders to share abusive images privately without Meta's ability to remove this material. They have turned their back on children. aic.gov.au/publications/t…

Meta's choice to fully encrypt its platforms means it has effectively exempted itself from its moral duty to ensure a product it commercializes doesn’t cause harm. Offenders know they can now trade CSAM without risking anything. This is unconscionable. protectchildren.ca/en/press-and-m…

Our research is unequivocal that men who sexually abuse children use encrypted apps at much higher rates than men who don’t. Meta’s decision will result in many more child sex offenders using Messenger.
Loredana Crisan@loredanacrisan

We’re starting to roll out default end-to-end encryption for personal calls and messages on @messenger. This isn’t a routine security update: we rebuilt the app from the ground up, in close consultation with privacy and safety experts. We added some new features too: you can now edit messages, turn off read receipts, send disappearing messages, and more.

Well done @mike_salter and Tim Wong on this review, which sheds important light on parents who abuse and produce #csam of their own children. Despite being common, this issue is rarely discussed and needs to be focused on more if we are to protect children from harm
Michael Salter@mike_salter

This review took five years to complete, and the findings are uncomfortable but important. We found that the most highly traded, in-demand and severe child sexual abuse material is being produced by parental figures. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/15…
