Four Charged After Suspect Vehicle Collides With Police Cruiser During Failed Getaway Investigators with York Regional Police have charged four men and are searching for a fifth suspect following an alleged retail theft at a Markham business. Police say officers responded to a business near Fairburn Drive and Highway 7 at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, after receiving reports that multiple suspects were loading power tools into shopping carts. According to investigators, the suspects had been recognized by the store's loss prevention personnel from previous theft incidents at the business. Police said loss prevention staff monitored the group as they moved through the store before allegedly watching them leave without paying. Employees then followed the suspects as they loaded the stolen power tools into a waiting vehicle and immediately alerted responding officers. As the suspects were preparing to flee, officers arrived and attempted to contain the vehicle. Police allege the suspect vehicle struck a police cruiser before all five suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Following a brief foot pursuit, officers arrested four of the five suspects. A fifth suspect remains outstanding. At the time of their arrests, all four men were on release orders.
