Glad to meet with NGO representatives in Bukhara today to discuss the UN’s work in Uzbekistan, the importance of engaging with civil society and grassroots organizations to better address the issues people face on the ground, and ways to strengthen NGO capacities.

🇺🇿 is at a key moment. Investing in children shapes the future. Global evidence shows every $1 invested in child-sensitive social sectors can yield about $2. Early childhood education even returns up to $13 per $1. Good to see partners united.

Delighted to launch the EU-funded Joint Programme on Women’s Economic Empowerment in Uzbekistan. The UN is committed to working with our partners to address the vital links between reproductive health, social norms, and economic opportunity for women and girls in Uzbekistan.

As part of the forum, we visited an exhibition showcasing advanced digital technologies, technical solutions, and specialized equipment to support a comprehensive approach to combating organized drug crime. Our country proposed creating a unified #AI platform for participating states to enable real-time tracking of drug trafficking, hazardous shipments, and transnational criminal activity.

Substance use disorders are health disorders. Globally, there are an estimated 300 million drug users, yet only a small fraction receive treatment.  New types of highly potent synthetic drugs are emerging every year, presenting significant public health risks. Stigma, discrimination, criminalization of people using drugs, and fear of punishment continue to push people away from care and away from the health systems that should protect them. A strong health response to drug-related harms requires health systems that: - integrate services for mental health and substance use with services to prevent communicable diseases at the primary health care level; - ⁠engage communities and civil society; - ⁠and support families, protect children, and reach people in prisons, in humanitarian crises, and on the margins of society. I salute the Government of #Uzbekistan for hosting, with @UNODC, the International Forum on Countering Transnational Drug Threats to Public Health and Security in Samarkand and putting increased attention on this critical health area. For decades, Central Asia has stood along a major trafficking route for Afghan opiates, shaping policies and public perceptions. 🔄Today, the situation is evolving: synthetic drugs and misuse of prescription medicines are rising, prompting countries to adapt systems with greater focus on health, prevention, and coordinated care. #Samfor2026

Grateful to Amanbay Orinbayev for a productive meeting in Nukus on the development priorities of the UN Uzbekistan and Republic of Karakalpakstan. Our focus remains on investing in people and improving the well-being of local communities in the Aral Sea Region.

In Nukus, our team visited the "Deyqan arna" mahalla. Learned how the local "Mahalla 7" works to support residents & improve well-being of the community. A highlight was seeing beekeeping projects providing incomes for local families.

A very productive meeting in Nukus with @kuranbayev_k and his team, alongside the UN Country Team. We exchanged views and agreed on concrete joint efforts to further strengthen our cooperation, with a primary focus on investing in people.

Sabine Machl – United Nations Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan I believe this is a truly commendable initiative and the “Yashil Makon” (Green Space) programme aimed at greening Uzbekistan is both timely and highly impactful. It was particularly encouraging to hear the President’s address not only to Tashkent but to the entire country. All regions shared updates on their achievements and progress online, and it was inspiring to see how meaningful this initiative is for everyone involved. Every tree makes a significant contribution to improving air quality and supporting water resources, underscoring the importance of this effort. Expanding such initiatives to every neighbourhood would be especially beneficial. I am pleased to take part in this event and hope that similar initiatives will continue to grow. We welcomed our partners to the "Gathering" theatre play yesterday. 🎭 We’re using the stage to talk about barriers that still hold women back and the social norms that erode their rights—but also to showcase real ways we can all support women and girls.

President Shavkat #Mirziyoyev met with @UNWTO Secretary-General @Shaikha__Nasser to discuss expanding long-term cooperation in the tourism sector. The talks focused on joint projects, expert and technical cooperation, and increasing annual tourist arrivals to 20 million by 2030.
