KONYA, TÜRKIYE: Shaykh Hammad Mustafa al-Madani al-Qadri visited and paid his respects at the maqām of Sulṭān Shams al-Dīn Tabrīzī. Sulṭān Shams was the mirror. He reflected and showed to Mawlānā Rūmī’s his true self and his innermost spirit. Their meeting was like the convergence of two oceans, each quenching the other’s thirst. One wished to entrust the passionate fire of ardent divine love and the other longed to be consumed by it. Contrary to popular belief, Mawlānā Rūmī was not unfamiliar with spirituality. He was guided along the spiritual path by both his father, Sulṭān Bahāʾ al-Dīn, and his deputy, Shaykh Burhān al-Dīn al-Tirmidīhi. The seed had been planted. Consequently, Sulṭān Shams appeared as the sun that eviscerates unwanted weeds, yet provides vigorous warmth needed for the heart’s soil to nurture the fruits and flowers of spiritual labour. Before Sulṭān Shams’ arrival to Konya, Mawlānā Rūmī would be surrounded by books, deeply immersed in the complexities of logic and philosophy, shackled by the chains of rational justifications. His brilliant mind was engrossed by reasoning alone, unaware of the passion and longing that true love brings. He would speak of scepticism and illumination, offering judgments as if he was stringing together pearls of wisdom. Mawlānā Rūmī’s intellect illuminated every subtlety. Yet, his world remained a warehouse of books, and his lips recited only the secrets found within those pages. It was then that the sage of Tabrīz came and inspired him to seek true enlightenment through the fire of love. Sulṭān Shams challenged the value of arguments and rational proofs, prompting Mawlānā Rūmī to realise that true wisdom lies beyond intellect alone. The words and presence of Sulṭān Shams kindled a fire within Mawlānā Rūmī. A flame so ardent, it consumed the pride of knowledge, the confusion of philosophy and illuminated his heart with the light of spiritual experience. Once a stranger to the miracles of love and the melodies of the heart, Mawlāna Rūmī was now utterly transformed. Through Sulṭān Shams al-Dīn Tabrīzī, Mawlānā Rūmī awakened to the secrets of love, transcending the limitations of intellect and entering the realm of the heart.
