@johnzazel And of course people should supplement their fics with published writing, because everyone should read a variety of stuff!! Reading is great and exploring new genres is so rewarding

@johnzazel As well as the gothic classics (which are my favourites) like Poe and Shelley. Of course 99% of fics aren't measuring up to the quality of these writers, but thats bc 99% of writing isnt. My point is just that fanfic is writing and it has the capacity to be great, or shit

the way that so many grown adults are agreeing and saying shit like “I’ve read better fanfic better than many books out there!” is making me insane don’t even bother opening the schools it’s over

@criterionhouse If you want to go to for something from the time, i think Antigone is the most approachable of the greek tragedies and also one of the most engaging. If you want to be educated on the mythos, go for the Theogony! It's where most intro to classics courses will start.

@PinstripeBungle Oh exactly, he couldn't exactly have Matt Damon stare at the screen and explain to the audience the intricacies of Xenia for 10 minutes mid film, so I can appreciate how that would've been difficult to convey

@SadGoatNoises I'm sympathetic to how clunky it is because it would be 100% assumed part of the worldview for any original audience so you do have to spell out how their moral system worked.

nolan adds some framing and expository stuff. some good, some clumsy, some mixed but my favorite by far was saying "zeus's law" a dozen times per scene to drive home to a western audience that you are supposed to give guests food.

@bvckystjames Ok idk how much you know about the end of the bronze age, but a very fun fact is that this is ACTUALLY what historians think that raids from 'sea people' is one of the inciting reasons for the bronze age collapse, so Nolan has integrated actual greek history which is so cool

#theodyssey spoilers - - - - - the slow build of revealing that odysseus and his men were the sea people that the people feared. mentioning that the incidents were getting closer as they get closer to home. their actions in Troy being what destroyed zeus’ law

@BlighttownNIMBY @samanthatarly This is genuinely the thing that kills me and people just dont seem to realise it, the odyssey as we know it is ALSO a reception. I'm so glad there are some people out here who understand the pain i feel everyday on the internet 😪

I’m waiting for cheaper tickets on Monday to watch the Odyssey but I am looking forward to it. I have an open mind and a robust soul and unlike some of the most vocal critics I understand classical reception and adaptation theory in film enough to approach it willingly.

@helenawsparta And that isnt a dig at Jorge, epic is extremely impressive as a debut musical but Nolan has years of experience in film making and it really shows. Also as a classics student his integration of real bronze age history was really cool to see!!

@helenawsparta I cant believe im becoming a Chris Nolan defender in real time but as much as I love epic this absolutely isnt true, I would say they BOTH have elements that aren't pulled precisely from the text, but i think Nolan's execution is much cleaner. It was def worth the watch.

@PinstripeBungle I think the execution was just a bit clunky and calling it 'zeus' law' was the quickest way to shorthand the religious element of it, and the whole 'treat others how you want to be treated' was a very oversimplified explanation

@PinstripeBungle Tbf it was more in reference to Xenia, which was the major theme of the original epic and it has specific religious connotations in the greek world, its sometimes translated as 'ritualised guest friendship', and bc zeus was the god of hospitality he specifically oversaw it

@saeioura As someone who has also done the English lit classics comb, I actually super enjoyed it!! There was something especially cool hisory wise and if she knows much about the end of the bronze age I think she'll really like the addition 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

@thhouseofblack @CauliFlawaVA I will say ive studied classics and I actually really enjoyed it, there are some choices I thought were questionable, but as a modern adaptation of the odyssey I think it works, and what was super awesome was that he integrated real bronze age history in there 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️
