Back in Zaria in 2018, a man walked into the Emergency Department saying he had a bullet lodged in his head and that he has been having recurring headaches. It sounded almost impossible and I remember exchanging amused looks with my colleagues. One of my colleague advised that I should just do a X-ray to tick all boxes. We decided to do an X-ray.Then the image came back and there it was. He had been attacked by bandits on his way to Zamfara state .He survived, stayed home for weeks and somehow still walked into the hospital alive. I still think about that moment sometimes and it still sends chills down my spine. Unless you experience certain things in person, it’s sometimes hard to believe them.

State violence played a huge role in Christianizing Europe and the Americas. Now let me turn to Islam. I see that you are ignorant, and this has made you conflate political expansion with religious conversion. When Muslim armies defeated the Byzantine and Persian empires, they conquered land and established political authority. They did not put swords to the necks of civilians to change their faith. If they did, places like Egypt, Syria, and Persia would have become Muslim overnight. However, historical records show these regions remained majority Christian and Zoroastrian for almost 300 years after the initial Islamic conquest. They converted gradually over centuries under the Dhimmi system because they were protected and allowed to keep their faith. Take a look at the largest Muslim populations today. Indonesia, Malaysia, and massive regions of East and West Africa. No Muslim army ever marched there. Islam spread entirely through trade routes, scholars, and the moral character of Muslim merchants. Do not take my word for it. Sir Thomas Arnold, a non-Muslim historian in his book “The Preaching of Islam” thoroughly dismantled this sword myth. In fact, the famous British historian De Lacy O'Leary wrote in his book “Islam at the Crossroads” and stated expressly that: the myth of the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword is one of the most fantastically absurd myths that historians have ever repeated. Oftentimes, Allah opens doors of halal rizq after putting a person through three tests: First: things get tight even though you’re trying, so you learn you’re not really in control. Second: you get let down by the very places you felt safe, so you realize no one has control except Allah. Third: you accept that others might get more than you, even if they seem less qualified, so you understand that wishing their blessing gone won’t benefit you, and that your heart needs training to accept Allah’s wisdom. Once you truly realise and accept that you’re not in control (and neither is anyone else) Allah opens doors for you. Allah ('azza wa jalla) says: “They say: ‘Do we have any say in this matter?’ Say: ‘Indeed, all matter belongs to Allah…’” (surah Āli-Imrān:154)
