Any attempt to treat Somaliland as a unified, independent entity ignores the social, historical, and political facts on the ground. Somaliland is home to five major clans, yet only one clan, the Isaaq seeks secession. Even then, the Isaaq do not represent the majority of the population. The Isaaq clan inhabits only about 35% of Somaliland. More than 55% of the territory is inhabited by the Darood clan, one of Somalia’s major clans, deeply loyal to the Somali state. The Darood were at the forefront of resistance against European colonialism and were the first people on the African continent to suffer aerial bombardment in the early 1920s. The North Eastern State, which is loyal to Somalia, controls over 55% of what is claimed as Somaliland and is a recognized Federal Member State of Somalia. In August 2023, Somaliland forces were completely disarmed, and their military equipment was taken over by the North Eastern State. Awdal is inhabited by the Dir clan, the Issa and Samaroon who have consistently affirmed their loyalty to Somalia. These realities make it impossible politically, socially, and legally, to justify external interference or recognition schemes that undermine Somalia’s unity. Ignoring the will of the majority clans and regions is not diplomacy; it is destabilization. Somalia’s sovereignty is not negotiable, and no reckless violation will change the facts on the ground.
