Alhamdulillah. Today I was honored to be congratulated by the department PhD cohort after successfully defending my PhD. This journey has been long, demanding, and transformative: intellectually and personally. I am sincerely grateful to my professors, jury members, colleagues, fellow students and everyone in the department who supported me throughout this process. My appreciation also goes to Ibn Haldun University @ibnhalduni for providing an intellectually rigorous and nurturing academic environment, and to Türkiye Bursları @TurkiyeBurslari for their generous support and belief in international scholars. Their investment made this achievement possible. Thank you @haditurus

With Empirical data we establish that Climate Change (as one of the major fcators) triggers, sustains and exacerbate Political Violence not only in Somalia but all the Somali regions/territories in Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti. Our new research article, “Climate Change Induced Political Conflict and Violence in Greater Somalia” published with fellow researchers Prof. Mahat and Prof. Arab Dahir, examines how droughts, declining rainfall, and shrinking tree cover have intensified political violence across Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. Moving beyond clan-based explanations of conflict, we argue that climate change is not just background context but a structural force reshaping pastoral livelihoods, weakening institutions, and amplifying armed competition over land and water. Using high-resolution geospatial data (MODIS, TerraClimate) and conflict event data from Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, we combine satellite imagery, zonal statistics, and regression models to show how environmental stress overlaps with patterns of violence from 1997–2024. The study is unique in offering a multidisciplinary “critical climate history” of Greater Somalia, linking ecological degradation directly to conflict dynamics. Its significance lies in reframing climate change as a core security issue in the Horn of Africa - not a future risk, but a present driver of political instability in the whole region. @HoehneVirgil @AbdiwahabSheik7 @IbrahimRaage1 @ibrahimalegoz @gokhankavk @DemirciEbuzer @TapriTampereUni @MahatMacalim @ibnhalduni @Ehelsan_Saleban @afyare_elmi Full paper link: dergipark.org.tr/en/download/ar… #ClimateChange #Somalia #HoA #PeaceResearch #ClimateCrisis

In this essay I argue that "Maps shape how we imagine the world. When Africa is diminished on the map, Africa is diminished in the mind". "Cartographic colonialism shrank Africa not only on paper but also in the global consciousness and imagination" @WehliyeMohamed @googlemaps
The Elephant@theelephantinfo

Maps are never neutral. For centuries, the Mercator projection has shrunk Africa, distorting global perception of its true size and significance. This is #CartographicColonialism. The #CorrectTheMapCampaign, supported by the African Union, led by Africa No Filter & Speak Up Africa, advocates for the Equal Earth Projection. Now time for a #GeographicJustice. Africa’s true scale is staggering. It can fit the U.S., China, India, Japan, and most of Europe within its borders. Correcting the map is a step toward epistemic Liberation. It challenges colonial worldviews & reclaims Africa’s geopolitical agency. How we see the world shapes power. To see Africa fairly is to recognize its immense weight and dignity. NEW from @Sahansame93: A deep dive into the life and work of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o - Kenya's greatest novelist, and an implacable opponent of empire and oppression. You'll want to read his 1980 novel "Devil on the Cross" after this.

All said and done...this man is the "father and mother" of Somalia's problems...everything else are his offsprings! Corrupt, greedy, incompetent, politically shortsighted, clueless...when a country doesn't have a serious leader, or has a petty trader as one, it becomes prey to be devoured!

Starting at 1% in the polls, @ZohranKMamdani pulled off one of the great political upsets in modern American history. Yes. We CAN create a government that represents working people and not the 1%. I look forward to working with Zohran as he builds a city that works for all.

🔷A NEW COLOR IN OUR SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES' LANGUAGE EDUCATION RANGE: SWAHILI Our School of Languages, which has become a global brand in language education and enables its students to attain proficiency in the languages they study within a remarkably short period, has added a new language to its wide range of offerings: Swahili. This program, focused on one of Africa’s most widely spoken languages, holds the distinction of being the only Swahili course offered at the university level in Türkiye.
