A Stoichkov-inspired Bulgaria were one of the teams of the tournament. They had not won any of their previous 16 World Cup games before USA 94 - and didn't win any afterward just for good measure

@Soccerwriter It was great to have Michael on the podcast again, we did get a few other World Cup memories out him while he was on - and you can get more of his insights as a US soccer journalist covering multiple tournaments from his new book, Around The World Cup in 40 Years

@Soccerwriter provides a fantastic perspective of what hosting the World Cup meant for US soccer in the 1990s, the legacy that followed and gives us a few pointers on what to expect from its return to North America this summer

“Yep, I’m outside Oxford’s training now. It’s just as suspected. The plan seems to be kicking the ball to Stanley Mills and hoping for the best.” #oufc

At this stage replays were optional, teams swapped ends after every goal and corners were introduced at the semi-final stage

These early FA Cups in the amateur era are dominated by teams from public schools and the Home Counties, but fair play to Scotland's Queens Park who kept entering them - even if their record of actually being able to play the games was a bit more patchy

My favourite is Morton Betts, scorer of the first ever goal (and the winner) in an FA Cup final for the Wanderers in 1872 - he did so under the pseudonym AH Chequer, a nod to Harrow Chequers the team he also played for. He won one cap for England in 1877 - playing in goal

This was a stroll beyond Memory Lane, with only Wikipedia and Julian Fellows' The English Game as questionable source material to rely😀 But some incredible stories in those first FA Cups as at times it was like they were making the rules up as they went along - which they were

And for those looking for this week's #oufc - it's not the young Darren Purse who plays for Orient, it is one-time loanee Mark Warren - who I think is one of the players Sitton invites for a right sort out

It was definitely a case of bad timing for Sitton, both in managing Orient in a cash crisis and the new found interest from TV executives in the entertainment to be found inside football dressing rooms

Watching that documentary back is fascinating, but also sad when you know the consequences for Sitton - it effectively ended his coaching career before it had begun and was definitely a case of bad timing (a bad time to manage Orient and before football became savvy about TV)

But it was also a chance to dive into the world of football documentaries, so we focus a lot on the John Sitton/Chris Turner era made famous by the 'Club for a Fiver' documentary - and one Sitton half-time team talk in particular
