ON THE COVER Infinite currents. Artificial intelligence is often imagined as weightless—a flow of data moving through invisible digital systems. In reality, that flow depends on data centres that consume vast amounts of electricity and freshwater, much of it to remove heat. Could that heat—and the water used to carry it away—come from somewhere already going to waste? Just a few kilometres away, in many cities, wastewater treatment plants discharge enormous volumes of treated effluent that can serve as a coolant. Their sludge drying and anaerobic digestion, in turn, need heat to run—heat a data centre has too much of. In this issue, Aijie Wang and colleagues show how these two infrastructures can be coupled rather than managed in isolation. By mapping 4,775 data centres and 57,547 municipal wastewater treatment plants across 98 countries, they identify opportunities for treated effluent to cool data centres, while return heat supports sludge drying and anaerobic digestion. Their optimized data–water symbiosis could reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by about 84 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent each year, conserve about 1,300 million m3 of freshwater and deliver annual net cost savings of US$95.4 billion. As AI expands, its infrastructure need not draw endlessly on separate streams of energy and water; it can be redesigned around exchange.
Environmental Science and Ecotechnology@ESEjournal

AI may feel weightless, but its growth depends on very physical systems: electricity, cooling water, heat exchange, and urban infrastructure. ESE's new cover article about “Global data-centre–wastewater symbiosis” reimagines this challenge as a circular infrastructure opportunity. Read the article here: doi.org/10.1016/j.ese.….

Congratulations to Dr. Dario R. Shaw on receiving the Best Presentation Award at the International Water Association (IWA) Nutrient Removal and Recovery Conference 2026. The award recognizes Dr. Shaw's research on a novel salt-tolerant anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) bacterium cultured from the Red Sea, with the potential to transform the treatment of high-salinity wastewater. The work could support more sustainable wastewater treatment by reducing energy demand while advancing water reuse—an important step toward addressing water scarcity and supporting Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030. Presented at one of the world's leading conferences on wastewater treatment, nutrient removal, and resource recovery, this recognition highlights the international impact of KAUST research in environmental biotechnology. Congratulations to Dr. Shaw and the team on this outstanding achievement! We recently submitted a brief research report to the Frontiers journal Environmental Engineering. There was a clearly unethical reviewer who was not dismissed by the journal editors. See a comment on what happened at #PubPeer: #1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">pubpeer.com/publications/D…

18 years ago, the first edition of Biological Wastewater Treatment was published and quickly became a cornerstone text in the field. The second edition, published in 2020, built upon that foundation and has now been downloaded more than 400,000 times! - doi.org/10.2166/978178… The book brings together modern scientific and engineering approaches to wastewater treatment, moving beyond older empirical methods to a foundation based on chemistry, microbiology, and mathematical modelling. The second edition updates this core knowledge to reflect significant recent advances and includes emerging technologies such as granular sludge, membrane bioreactors, and biofilm systems. An essential read for young water professionals, Biological Wastewater Treatment is available to read as an Open Access eBook via our website - doi.org/10.2166/978178… #BiologicalWastewaterTreatment #BWWT #OpenAccess #Wastewater #WaterResearch

At just 14 years old, Jude Baker had already survived a battle most adults can barely imagine. After fighting Ewing sarcoma, enduring chemotherapy, surgery & months in & out of hospitals, he was granted a Make-A-Wish. He could have asked for anything. A trip to Disney World. A celebrity meet & greet. A dream vacation. Instead, Jude chose to give. During his treatment, he had seen another kind of suffering. People sleeping on the streets with no bed, no warm meal & no one to care for them. That image stayed with him. So when his wish came, he didn’t ask for an escape. He asked to help. In Summerville, Georgia, Jude turned his wish into a day of compassion. Together with Make-A-Wish Georgia & local volunteers, he organized an outreach event that served hot meals, distributed sleeping bags, backpacks & essential supplies to more than 300 people experiencing homelessness. Even after everything his body had been through, Jude stood & served. He made sure every person received what they needed before he allowed himself to rest. A Child who had every reason to focus on himself chose instead to lift others. Jude’s story is a powerful reminder that healing goes far beyond surviving. It’s about what we do with the life we’re given back. In healthcare we chase cures, technology & efficiency, which are all important. But moments like this show us the deepest medicine is often the simplest. Seeing someone, restoring their dignity & showing up with kindness. Jude didn’t just beat cancer. He became a source of healing for others. ❤️

1. You can hear the heartbreaking desperation in this dad’s voice — he wants to help his son so badly. This video is over three minutes long which means it won’t get recommended in Instagram’s algorithm. If you’re on Instagram, please go share it so more people can see it and become potential blood stem cell donors. Link to the video in the post below.

🚨 URGENT HELP NEEDED: This is Liv Perrotto — an incredible little girl with cancer who’s just been given six months to live Doctors are attempting to throw in the towel. But she’s REFUSING to quit. Liv’s trying to get her case in front of @drpatrick ASAP, and @US_FDA MUST approve her to start Anktiva, a potentially lifesaving treatment, IMMEDIATELY. This is Liv’s LAST HOPE, SO PLEASE SHARE FAR AND WIDE! And if anyone can have Dr. Soon-Shiong reach out, that would be tremendous. Red tape is getting in the way, as FDA is currently BLOCKING minors from receiving this treatment, so this might even require @SecKennedy to step in. Liv is such a brave fighter. I genuinely don’t know how she does it. I’ve gotten to know Liv and her family over the past few months. They’ve tried absolutely everything, cross-crossing the country trying various treatments. No luck. From Liv’s mom @rebeccaperrotto: “We tried an immunotherapy trial in Seattle and that was unsuccessful. We have been at this since March 2021. Her cancer is everywhere now. It recently spread to leptomeningeal. We are doing ten radiation treatments to help her side effects. But not to cure.” Liv refuses to give up, and I refuse to give up on Liv. Any help, prayers, or shares is appreciated 🙏🏻
