You might think I’m picking on @Jacob_Rees_Mogg. I suppose am. His position was so utterly hypocritical, inconsistent, and weak in the Oxford Islam debate. While he was very polite to me personally, and it was nice to chat with him over dinner, these moments showed him at his most pathetic. He mocked us, the people who came to debate suspicion of Islam in a public place, calling us weak, “desperate old pinkos… Wee, sleekit, cow’rin, tim’rous beasties” who were “fretting”. But he is the one who came over all cowering and timorous – just like a mouse himself – when he thought @LozzaFox, a free British man, might unveil a forbidden, blasphemous cartoon I had prepared with him in advance. Sire Jacob jumped to his feet, all nervous. He begged the chair to ban the use of props in the debate. He was scared. Can’t blame him really. Jacob’s relief was palpable when the cartoon was unveiled. It turned out to be a mockery of HIM... so that was OK! And then, just to demonstrate his objection to props was fake, he got out his own prop: a little cross, which he held aloft as if to ward off a vampire. If he really believed that cross would protect us all, why was he so worried about the cartoon?

Mamdani is blowing through $70 million in taxpayer money to build government-run grocery stores that will likely put neighborhood bodegas out of business. How can they compete with a city-owned store that doesn't care when it loses 28 cents on every single dollar it rings up? A key ally of Mamdani said the quiet part out loud when asked about bodega owners being wiped out: "If one publicly owned grocery store is bringing prices down enough to put a man out of business, then maybe he shouldn't have been in that business in the first place." That isn't free enterprise. That's communism. And when the government forces local grocers out of business, New Yorkers will be left with only one option, just like every communist experiment before them: a failing government store with empty shelves.
