Such a fun team NEST-VT meeting today! Thanks to Rebecca (PESGM), Mazen (IEEECDC), and Dakota (PESGM) for presenting their new works on PV curtailment, battery opti, and energysheds. Great to have visitors from @BurlingtonElec (Freddie), @VelcoVT (Dan) , and @vermontpublic (Lou).

Enjoyed learning about the rich backgrounds and great work being done by @uvmvermont colleagues from across disciplines at one of my regular faculty breakfasts.

Introducing NEST-VT: Next-gen Energy Systems Team of Vermont. Great group of students, postdocs, and faculty working rigorously on practically relevant problems
Excited to work with new colleagues @SamCChevalier and @AMP_andey to scale up the impact of our power/energy research.

@theEnergyMads @florian_dorfler Swiss Sterling Pond 🤣 stop it.

Taking a breather from Zurich city life and trying to see how how well die Alpen compare with the Green Mountains. Here is the “Swiss Sterling Pond” (aka Seealpensee). Thanks to @florian_dorfler for suggestion!

@netcapgirl @kyrib, sorry, but it’s time to rewrite your DCOPF feasibility paper for truly lossless AC networks 🤷 I’m sure the editors will understand!!

@PMoutis @Nuclearjunkie Imagine local electricity costs become a new criteria for choosing where to buy a house: gotta check the schools, HOA fee, property taxes, historical d-LMPS..😎😅
Israel 🇮🇱 English

@Nuclearjunkie No sane energy researcher (those in this thread included) considers "exposing end-customers to wholesale prices" as you frame it. These are nuanced opinions of people who actually understand the risk of disregarding the 'social welfare' role of electricity...
English

While it seems Jesse isn't quite advocating for full wholesale market exposure, the number of people in this thread who seriously are is horrifying.
Jesse D. Jenkins@JesseJenkins
We need to do better than fixed period time of use rates. Dynamic, cost-reflective rates &/or super discounted automated load management programs are needed to unlock real economics of electrification + avoid billions in wasted/poorly utilized capital investment in grid capacity.

The CORE Systems Lab at UVM (madsalma.github.io) is very excited to be recruiting multiple creative+hard-working PhD students to do R&D at the intersection of optimization and control in power/energy systems.
See attached description for one GRA. Other opportunities too.

@kyrib @priyald17 Yeah me too..

@kyrib @priyald17 I only say “bad” because DC3 was intended for a learning-based approach, which will surely outperform the DCOPF in step 1 :-)
English

@kyrib Here’s a (bad?) idea:
1. DCOPF
2. ACPF
3. Identify inequality violations
4. Use @priyald17’s cool DC3 (arxiv.org/pdf/2104.12225…) to iteratively push PV setpoints in directions which lower violations, but “along the manifold of points satisfying [ACPF] equality constraints.”

@theEnergyMads Glad to hear rumors of your demise have been greatly exaggerated :-)

🥹Thanks, Sam, but I am not dead. Just moving timezones. Thanks for the fabulous conversations, great times, and our one accepted @ieeecdc2022 paper together on first try 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰 På gensyn!

Tremendously sad to see this whiteboard message from @theEnergyMads today. It was beyond fantastic having him @DTUpower over this last year!! I guess you can have him back now, @uvm_ee..
