If you're naturally smart, turning 8+9 into 10+7 comes naturally and this chunking makes more difficult math, like turning 77+88 into 100+65 or 170-5, simpler.
If you're not, chunking adds a confusing second step to addition and you'll never be able to chunk 77+88 anyway.
