@BrianStewartOH @rooster_ohio @SJPOSU @OhioState Brian, what happens during a hypothetical future administration when a liberal government decides to render non-citizens for attending Trump rallies or advocating for conservative policies? Are you still going to lick the boots of the executive or will that be a problem then?

@rooster_ohio @SJPOSU @OhioState No, but if you’re a Jordanian exchange student who spends all your campus time acting as a mouthpiece for Hamas while harassing Jewish students, your student visa can be revoked and you can be sent home.

An awful lot of the anti-Semite @SJPOSU “Long Live the Intifada” losers that march from @OhioState down to the Statehouse are just like Khalil. They might want to get their bags packed before the next one. 👀

Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University grad student, can be deported according to an immigration judge in Louisiana. Khalil can be deported on the grounds of being a national security risk after participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. bit.ly/3EkjsEO

Terminating unrelated biomedical research grants because of political accusations before any kind of investigation or due process is an obscene authoritarian move that in addition to being unamerican, will weaken America permanently
NIH@NIH

Today #NIH is terminating more than $250 million in funding—including more than 400 grants—to Columbia University following directives from the Trump Administration’s Joint Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. The cancellations are due to Columbia University’s continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students.

@evilduck92 @jdpereira No one thinks rare genetic diseases will apply to them or expect to receive a brain injury. So most people when presented with the option to contribute or keep the money for themselves will keep the money not understanding the altruistic or even self interest in funding

@evilduck92 @jdpereira At this point though I don’t see how that is more efficient than the current system? Just a confusing bureaucracy with less funding and I think this would suffer from an optimism bias.

The US mostly funds biomedical research through a large lump payment to the NIH. Panels of scientists and doctors volunteer to decide on the merit of grant individual applications, not unlike a really boring battle royale. All of this is halted. No new science is being funded.

@evilduck92 @jdpereira The a la cart system of government funding breaks down at scale. There would be too many grants for people to vote on and most civilians, even if they took time to read the breakdowns, would be unlikely to grasp the true scope of the work, how it fits with previous lit etc

I'm all for funding Science. There should be a big science go fund me type service that evaluates projects and gives people an idea of what each is about, their possible value, likelihood of achieving something, and such. None of it should be funded by taxpayers who have no say in how their money is allocated.

@jdpereira Certainly both can be true, no? Scientific training? Yes Critical thinking skills? Yes Most job opportunities presented to PhD students during training being aimed at keeping them in academic research? - true But Over saturation of GRAs because we’re cheap labor? Also yes

Goodness, again? This does go around in circles, doesn’t it? A PhD isn’t meant to train you to stay in academia. It’s meant to train you to be an expert at a specific scientific field in order to do a specific job. Should we do a much better job of conveying that? Yes.
Vinay Prasad MD MPH@VPrasadMDMPH

There are too many bio PhD positions. Few of these graduates are able to obtain a PI position. Universities only train so many because they are cheap labor who will work 80 plus hours a week for 60 grand.

The NIH’s new imposed standard indirect cost rate threatens life-saving brain and behavior research that benefits millions of Americans. SfN, with other scientific organizations, urge reversal of this policy and implore Congress to protect critical research infrastructure. Read the full statement: bit.ly/4jVJnCL

@DrPHO_ID @hubermanlab @SebastianCaliri @NIHDirector @NIH I’ve always wondered this and never understood why university endowments couldn’t be used to support these resources. Surely it would be a way for universities to “invest” in the research potential to bring in future dollars?

@hubermanlab @SebastianCaliri @NIHDirector @NIH I used to hate indirects and universities definitely have room to cut admin bloat, but without indirects, how would an institution have all the equipment/space, personnel and wiggle room to take risk on for new/junior folks who aren’t yet sufficiently funded?

At this weeks meeting w/@NIHDirector it was raised that an entire generation of would be academic scientists will opt for other professions or go to industry if getting @NIH grants isn’t made easier (again). This would require more tax-derived funds or shifting funds. Thoughts?

Since we're talking about funding of absurd research by NIH and other federal agencies, the funded scientists: - watching flies fuck - giving rats massages - spending years digging into why jellyfish glow - tracking penguin poop from space - using horseshoe crab blood
