Here's to Bill Russell, a leadership icon who was misunderstood & underappreciated in his time and remains so today. He was, and still is, the greatest team captain in the history of sports.

In the late seconds of Game 7 of the '57 NBA Finals, Bill Russell made the single greatest defensive play in league history, if not sports history. It's known as the Coleman Play. boston.com/sports/boston-… Sadly, the footage was taped over. But here's a video of a similar play:

In 1975, Bill Russell declined to attend his own Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The mystery of WHY would linger for the next 41 years. I wrote about the answer in "The Captain Class" (see below). This is one of the greatest leadership lessons I have ever encountered.

A few years back read The Captains Class by @SamWalkers - he wrote of the greatest leaders / captains in the best sporting teams of all time. He introduced me to the story of basketball legend Bill Russell (who died today) and from memory had him just about at the top of the list
