Thoughts from Valspar:
-When they say every shot counts, they really mean it on the pgatour. Thanks to Neal making a timely bogey on his last hole, I was able to put two solid rounds together and finish T-28th. This can be the difference between top 50 for signature events, a potential Masters invite for me, and in the short term 25 FedEx cup points which is not nothing. The cut is such a big part of the pgatour. I actually hit my 7ft putt on my last hole Friday with pretty little care because I was pretty sure that +2 wasn’t going to make it. I’m sure there are players that got too aggressive on the last hole thinking they needed birdie and made bogey instead. Margins are incredibly thin on tour.
-Valspar made big improvements to their dining situation. It’s now at least average if not slightly above average when it comes to player dining. Hopefully they continually try and make improvements year after year. Thank you!
-Viktor Hovland is just supremely talented. Idk if he realizes how many guys he has influenced to make swing changes to a bowed left wrist hitting pull cuts. I’ve talked to at least 2 or 3 players (including me!) that tried that because of how good and free he looks hitting the ball. (Don’t try it. It’s a very unique move and it takes a lot of speed and mobility to even try to hit it straight from there imo)
-Copperhead innisbrook is a great test. -10 to -15 winner score is the golden area for a good test. Bunkering and trees are fantastic and although the greens tend to be bland, they play really slow and with just a little bit of wind, it’s an awesome test. Shows how good and fair of a golf course it is by the quality field it gets every yr despite some disadvantages in other areas.
-I’m really running on fumes at this point haha. Back and neck isn’t feeling great and really ready for some time off. But! I still have one more chance at qualifying for the Masters. I’ll prob need a top 20 to get a spot. At this point, I’ll be happy with or without the week off but I want to give myself the opportunity.
-Onto Houston! I’m not the biggest fan of the golf course but it’s time to make friends with it. I wasn’t a huge fan of pga national but did well there so 🤷🏻♂️
