If you’re an AMAZING server who does the most to give me a pleasant experience I’ll tip. But for doing the job you’re employed to do? Yeah nah.

Wait staff rarely own business in Australia, and work just as hard. “Systemised tipping” implies a couple of things. 1st: that the business is doing the patron a favour by serving them. And 2nd: as a patron, if I don’t “tip” then I don’t get served…which means it’s not actually a tip, it’s a tax.

We went to a dinner as a group and had a $500 bill. We tipped $40. We were happy we can be able to give our server something, but her reaction was the opposite. She told us she assumed we're going to give her at least $120. When we asked for the manager, she said she was just joking, but she wasn't smiling at all. Idk, but is $40 tip enough for $500 bill? I just feel like expecting $120 is not realistic. ~Lea Robertson

Finally watched My Mother Jayne last night - thanks insomnia. Absolutely brilliant. What a journey for Mariska and her siblings. I cried at the end…The bravery it took to share that story. The parallels of Mariska’s life with the mum she barely remembers. Powerful stuff.
