@MichaelRocky11 @thejolson You're combining two different areas of discourse: people just watching playthroughs and not playing any of the games, and people only playing the remakes. Only playing the remakes is fine (encourage to play the OGs ofc)

This is a disingenuous framing of the discussion. The vast majority of people aren’t saying you aren’t a resident evil fan if you don’t play RE9. Most are saying you’re not a resident evil fan if you have not played ANY of the games.

the roko's basilisk guys are so funny bc they correctly intuit that our lives will be controlled by a psychotic, amoral algorithm that hates humanity but they think some nerd in SF is going to build it on his macbook. it was already built, in 1602, by the Dutch

@LvVStudiosYT @ATXResurrected I don't follow this at all. Of course cutting out the new stuff will lead to less difference between the games. It changes how you progress through the mansion by adding new items (Death masks quest), changes how Richard works by giving you a new shotgun, etc.

@Samael776 @ATXResurrected It doesn't change anything. Cut out all the new stuff (for now) and it's just a remaster That's what I mean. It's in a grey area

@LvVStudiosYT @ATXResurrected Lol, the problem is that as a remake you're expected to be compared to the original. That's what my point was in my first reply. RE3 is a better game than RE3R. That's why RE3R gets dogpiled: it is actively worse of a game because it's a 'fine' remake of a better game

@LvVStudiosYT @ATXResurrected As for RE3R, I genuinely do enjoy the hospital, but its the only memorable part of the game for me. OG RE3 is just more dynamic with more content, and going back to RPD as Jill is more effective than any nod to RE2R imo. RE3R is *fine* on its own merits. Not terrible, not great.

@LvVStudiosYT @ATXResurrected I have to call 2002 a full remake. Just because it keeps the fixed angles doesn't make it less of a remake imo. It changes a *lot* from the original. Consider Lisa Trevor alone. Not as much change as 2/3/4 of course, but it is a different experience.

@LvVStudiosYT @ATXResurrected Interesting take. I know people have different definitions of remake, but REmake 2002 is more than just a remaster, certainly? And yes RE2R/4R have problems and cut content. But at least RE2R improved Mr. X. I do not see such improvements in RE3R outside of the dodge roll.

@Samael776 @ATXResurrected 2002 Remake is not a true "remake". A better example would be RE2R and RE4R (who guess what, also cut out stuff from the original)

@LvVStudiosYT @ATXResurrected Maybe actually improve on the game and people wouldn't talk about the original so much (See REmake 2002). It's no surprise that RE3R being the bad remake brings more attention to the original.

@marccomicaze @Shady56166221 @junebugparadise For sure, it's not always a positive but it's definitely a different perspective than someone new filling the role. Just frustrating to see people claim that REmake should be treated like RE2make or RE3make when they're clearly different approaches. And I still love RE2make!

@Samael776 @Shady56166221 @junebugparadise That’s not always feasible and sometimes it leads to poor results (MM3D) but generally it does help make something more faithful. The other thing is just being literate and observational if you aren’t the original director, which a lot of people aren’t

i'm barely out of my 20s, and played the originals in my late teens. i wish we didn't have to make excuses for accessibility that amount to anything other than personal taste
Samuel Deats 🌕@SamuelDeats

"just play the originals" may sound fine to us 30 and 40 year old who grew up with em but the truth is for most young gamers those old tank controls are a tall hurdle to overcome. Hell, *I* hated em when I was playing these games at 14.

@Shady56166221 @junebugparadise Honestly in comparison to playing RE2 vs RE2 remake he’s right. I’m not sure if he’s being literal but you can in fact make more of an argument that you played RE1 if you played RE1 remake since the game design philosophy and so forth is generally the same

@goreban666 @SynthLosesIt @tonestirade That's interesting, when my friends and I played the original, we were scared out of our minds, especially in apartments and prison. Playing SH2R felt like going through any other action game. I still love SH2R for other reasons fwiw.

@SynthLosesIt @tonestirade It isn’t, sure. It’s all subjective, honestly, but one thing that makes me prefer 3rd person is that’s it’s WAY scarier. I love SH2, but it’s not scary. Not really. SH2R had me almost taking stress breaks because how scary and intense it was.

@SynthLosesIt @goreban666 @tonestirade What SH1 does with the camera is really interesting. Everybody remembers the intro with the weird turning overhead alley, and that's the most striking part, but it does weird and great stuff throughout. IIRC there's a button input to change angles when you enter some rooms.

@Samael776 @goreban666 @tonestirade I can agree sh1 might just use the fixed camera more. I always think about that one locker with the cat in it. The way the camera frames the entire room around this single rattling locker makes it so effective, especially when it comes back after the building turns.

@SynthLosesIt @goreban666 @tonestirade That's totally fair, and of course there's a lot of direction to those shots even if they're not totally fixed. Locking the camera fully just makes each room instantly memorable for me. SH1 experiments to various degrees of success, but the parking lot from 2 is a good pull

@Samael776 @goreban666 @tonestirade Hard disagree honestly. Of course it has more moving shots and the like, so it isn't hard fixed like you said. That is true. But so many shots are used meaningfully. Even just the parking lot or some of the grimy rooms, it is all so disconcerting, isolating and impactful.

@goreban666 @tonestirade It's the best for the progeny of RE4, but I wouldn't call RE4 the natural evolution of survival horror precisely because it revolutionized the genre so much. The vibe that fixed angles bring is integral to a different branch of survival horror that can still exist and thrive.

@tonestirade I don’t get this obsession with fixed camera. Like, I dig fixed camera games and it’s a vibe, but a high budget fixed camera game just sounds like a waste honestly. I fully think 3rd person is the BEST for survival horror. It’s the natural evolution of fixed camera.

@SynthLosesIt @goreban666 @tonestirade Honestly I feel like SH2R is one of the few times I'm okay with leaving fixed angles behind; SH as a series never used them nearly as much/as tightly as RE. Definitely takes away from some areas in SH2 but imo you lose a lot less in SH2R than in RE2R

@goreban666 @tonestirade A fixed camera allows for genuine cinematography. Playing with the camera to drag your eyes subtly away from the horror, or towards it. It can be one of the most effective ways to handle a horror game, its super impactful. Sh2 isnt the same without it.
