President @MMuizzu and his team deserve due credit for settling the USD 500 million sukuk and the USD 50 million payment to India. Given the pressure on reserves and external financing, this was not an ordinary achievement. Some may downplay it by saying Maldives has never defaulted before, true but Maldives has also never had to settle such a large amount in such a short period under this level of pressure. A default would have damaged confidence, pushed up borrowing costs, worsened the dollar situation, affected imports, and increased pressure on prices, businesses, jobs and ordinary households. We have seen how other countries struggled in similar situations. Maldives managed to avoid a financial crisis and preserve stability. For an import dependent country, that matters.
