I know some of you like Microsoft Teams for meetings, but YIKES it's awful.

@raulpacheco The best thing about your work in helping students develop these skills is that you make one believe it is so do-able. I always thought these skills were developed in early scholarly stages (max in undergrad) but you have made me believe that these can be developed at any stage.

We were about to sign off, and say a few last words... Microsoft Teams did not show the freaking status bar so I could NOT for the life of me unmute myself, which made me look like an absolute idiot, waving my hands saying "I can't unmute myself". I HATE MICROSOFT TEAMS.

If you do pre-recorded videos for your courses (asynchronous), how long are these? I have a 3 hour long lecture and I don't think I should be doing 3 hours worth of recording (thinking of 20 minutes each hour and then allowing students to write memos that respond to the lecture).

@raulpacheco Thank you! I am here with the support, encouragement, and assistance of so many others. It feels like a big deal for me, and so many others. It take a village to raise a child. That's me - the child being raised up. And also part of a community helping raise others up!

A good friend of mine finished his PhD at 51 years old. He feels "too old" to start an academic career. What I suggested to him was to start participating in conferences and writing papers and to dip his feet in the academic life. Any other advice you might offer is most welcome.

During checkout, a dear friend reminded me that I do a metric tonne of free work for academia at large. This work goes largely unrecognized in formal assessments. But this work is important, it’s hard, it’s time consuming and in the end I am happy that it helps many people.

Proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks: after years of frustration with citation managers that I eventually stopped using, I finally started using a basic Excel spreadsheet tailored to how I read and write. Life-changing. Thanks to @raulpacheco for the inspiration!
