I actually disagree-technically, engineers , physicists and nurses .. etc with a doctorate degree can legally call themselves doctors! If hospitals want they can ask them to wear a badge saying Dr Nurse or Nurse Dr xx

@Hragy @parthaskar Calling a physician a doctor is not a historic misnomer. It’s in Oxford dictionary, widely understood by the public & language users and part of the historic development of the word “doctor” which in fact is latin and means “to teach” so not related historically to a PhD either.

@parthaskar Yes, i totally understand, I just “feel” that specifically asking nurses who took the long way of getting a PhD not to call themselves doctors is discriminatory, and that the confusion should be corrected by another way that doesn’t hurt their feelings and belittle them.

@Frank9478968518 @Xeon4f145d96s1 There is no evidence around “commitment to specialty” and success in that specialty. It may be related, we don’t know. I had no intention of doing Psychiatry until a psychiatrist persuaded me to try a locum. After that I never looked back.

@Neuro_Matt Were they a neurologist? If another specialty asking for neurology opinion, that may be part of the patient’s presentation but can’t afford another private consultation.

Some behaviour in the private sector is wild. Got an external call today from someone accepting a referral privately for something WELL outside of their specialty’s scope, then called up an NHS neurology registrar to ask how to manage the condition they are charging £££ for.
