This work shows the brain’s capacity for flexible reorganization during decreasing alertness. Understanding how alertness fluctuations and cognitive processing jointly modulate brain networks is needed to develop an integrated framework of consciousness and cognition. 7/7

3) When people became drowsy, active task engagement was associated with increased long-range frontoparietal synchronization, but passive listening was mainly associated with increased parietal synchronization. 6/7
