We said for years that batteries would displace inefficient and pricey natural gas peaker plants first. In California and Texas, that's starting to happen.
More efficient natural gas combined cycle plants will have a role for quite a long time to come, but will increasingly lose out on some of the most profitable hours as batteries (charged mostly from solar) eat into those high priced summer late afternons and early evenings.

@jakluge But there are alternatives! EV, Solar, battery electric storage, etc. These technologies didn't exist or weren't viable at scale in the 1970s, they are now. And demand destruction will be permanent.

The world is not less dependent on oil than in the 1970s just because oil consumption/GDP is smaller. The economy can be dependent on tiny amounts of stuff - if there are no alternatives. Maybe counterintuitive, but: The _smaller_ consumption/GDP, the _higher_ the price can rise.

Everybody is involved in some kind of Ukraine negotiations - except for Putin. He continues to refuse to engage. He will listen to Witkoff's proposals and reject them - while holding a lecture about history. There is a lot of talking, but no meaningful negotiations taking place.
