@ZackPolanski You know it’s estimated to bring in £25,000,000,000 of tax revenues, right? Do you think that might help people? You just don’t get this stuff, do you. Yesterday you were talking about insulating every UK Home at the cost of £300bn & now you’re turning down tax revenues. Idiotic

@Michael90599642 @ReemAmirIbrahim Angela Rayner is the archetypal socialist: never had a job, everything paid for by the taxpayer, using her son‘s disability compo (she sued the NHS) to buy her 3rd Home & doesn’t like paying tax. When she retires, we will all pay her gold plated pension. They’re all hypocrites.

If you want to keep the pension triple lock, you want higher taxes. You can’t have one without the other.

@L__Macfarlane You might want to factor in the £25,000,000,000 of extra revenue raised from the windfall taxes, which tax oil and gas at 78%.

The only way new North Sea drilling cuts energy bills is if the UK: – Nationalises the rigs – Bans exports – Sells at cost-price None of that is on the table. It will be sold on global markets to the highest bidder. Bills won’t move an inch.

@Cal_III My 27-year-old didn’t go to university & started an office job earning £12k pa making tea. He worked his backside off, saved hard and bought his first house at 23. He’s recently moved to his second house (3 bed). Attitude and determination is the differentiator not a Masters.

Younger people are keenly aware that their parents and grandparents are on average much wealthier than them, unburdened by student debt, land owners, and generally have the deck already stacked in their favour

David/Zack/Titty whisperer’s latest economic strategy: “insulate every home”. Estimated cost: £250bn - £350bn. As we are learning quickly under this Government, economic stupidity hurts everyone. Zack’s brand of economics would hurt everyone, but the poorest would hurt the most.
Zack Polanski@ZackPolanski

Drilling for more oil & gas in the North Sea won't lower bills, it won't make us more energy independent and it won't insulate us from price shocks. A Labour backslide on this would be a huge betrayal. Double down on renewables. Insulate every home. Lower bills, permanently.

@ReemAmirIbrahim Yeah yeah. Such luxury afforded to those on £13,000 a year incomes. Perhaps some pensioners do not need the triple lock, but to make a sweeping statement like that shows you to be either stupid or unpleasant (perhaps both).

@lukerobertblack I think it’s pretty obvious he means the system is the tax system. By definition anyone receiving state pension has paid into the tax system for 35 years. Are you deliberately choosing to be disingenuous?

THERE IS NO “SYSTEM”. The state pension does NOT exist in personalised pots somewhere - or else, where do you think they’d be investing? There is no state pension fund manager. This is fundamentally dishonest nonsense. The state pension is a benefit. Stop perpetuating this lie!

@ZackPolanski Drilling for oil & gas would bring an additional tax revenues, given that the profits on oil & gas are taxed at 78%. This is est. to bring in an approximate £25bn over the next 10 years. In addition, could you explain where you’re getting the £250bn? Economic stupidity as per.

No refugee underfunded a hospital. No refugee closed a school. No refugee gave tax breaks to the rich. Instead of scapegoating refugees, let's tackle the real problem: an unjust economic system that concentrates wealth in the hands of the few.

@stephenpollard You’re wrong. They have paid in to the system. You need a minimum 35 years of paying national insurance to qualify for a full state pension. That’s paying into the system. Please do educate yourself.

@miriam_cates @serenelyjoyful Can you not read? He says they have paid into the system and they absolutely have. To qualify for a full state pension, 35 years of national insurance contributions are required. Today’s pensioners may not have a pot with their name on, but they deserve a state pension.

No one has ‘paid into’ the state pension. NI payments are spent by the government of the day, not put into a pot with your name on. Using these terms just perpetuates the myth that the state pension is a contributory scheme. It isn’t. It’s a non-means tested universal benefit paid for by current taxpayers.

@ZoeJardiniere Can we also have a conversation about how many completely unproductive members of Society we have? How certain cultures have extremely low propensity to work? Paying a pension to people with a 35 year national insurance record is perhaps less of a problem than you think.

Until we have an honest conversation about our ageing population, there’s no hope of having a reckoning about how to sustainably support people as they age. Older folks deserve a gold standard retirement. But we’re not being honest about what that costs, & how we can achieve it.
Tom McPhail@PensionsMonkey

Left unchecked, the Triple Lock will consume the entire known universe, it is an unsustainable transfer of wealth from people in work to the retired. It has to stop. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…
