I've been thinking about the energy architecture of our biggest tech stacks. We are obsessed with generation and storage, but we seem to completely ignore scavenging.
I believe there is a massive opportunity to close the loop by integrating Nanogenerators directly into our infrastructure to recover the energy we currently bleed out.
Based on my understanding, here are a few use cases where we could apply this:
@elonmusk (@Tesla & @SpaceX): I’ve been thinking about the energy we simply let go. Instead of losing it to rolling resistance and thermal waste, why not embed nanogenerators directly into the hardware?
For EVs:
The friction from the tyres is currently wasted. If we use triboelectric layers, we could convert that rolling energy into electricity to run the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), ABS sensors or other smar units. It cuts down the wiring harness weight freeing up range.
In Rockets:
The acoustic energy at launch is massive. We could harvest that vibration to power wireless structural health monitoring sensors. No batteries, no cables, just a "smart skin😋" powered by the roar of the engine.
And a wild thought for the Rocket Base:
The cryogenic plants chilling the propellant run 24/7 and pump out immense waste heat. Instead of venting it, let's run it through thermoelectric generators. That waste heat could power the base or even a nearby supercharger station. Free EV charging from rocket fuel cooling, a brilliant marketing, innit😅?
@nvidia:
The thermal output of high-performance chips are significant. What if we sandwich thermoelectric generators on the die, we could convert that waste heat back into electricity to drive on-chip micro-cooling pumps. The chip essentially helps cool itself.
@satyanadella@sundarpichai@JeffBezos@Meta@sama:
Data centers are effective wind tunnels. We could place wind-harvesting nanogenerators at exhaust vents. The cooling airflow alone could power the entire facility's IoT and security layer, taking those systems completely off the main grid.
It feels like we are leaving mega or giga watts on the table. What you think?
