IoT-Driven Water Management in Rural Tamil Nadu
In Erode district, Tamil Nadu, an IoT-enabled smart water management system has been introduced to improve efficiency in rural water supply networks. Using sensors to monitor tank levels and automate pump operations, the system enables real-time management of overhead tanks and prevents overflow, ensuring more reliable water distribution.
Deployed across 50 habitations in 16 villages, the solution has delivered a 40% reduction in electricity costs, 50% lower electricity consumption, and a 20% increase in water supply. In Ponmudi village alone, daily water availability increased by 44,180 litres.
The initiative demonstrates how technology-led, institution-driven solutions can improve water efficiency, reduce operational costs, and strengthen sustainable rural infrastructure.

If your child becomes a reader, about 80% of the education job is already done. That's my honest assessment after working in education for over thirty years. Everything else is secondary. Most parents think science education is important. Yes it is. But if you can't read the biology textbook, you're not going to learn biology.
Reading is the meta-skill that enables all other skills. History requires reading. Science requires reading. Even math increasingly requires reading as it becomes more sophisticated. The child who reads voraciously will figure out everything else. The child who doesn't will struggle with everything.

What if a plastic bottle could buy a child a meal and a better future? In some schools across India, sustainability is becoming part of everyday learning. Through initiatives supported by Buy Food With Plastic India, metal collection bins have been installed where students can deposit used plastic bottles. These bottles are then sent for recycling, and in return, students receive free meals. The idea is simple but powerful. Teach children that waste has value, and they grow up respecting the planet. Would you like to see similar recycling-for-rewards initiatives in schools across India?

She Turns Wastewater into Green Gold!
Dr Akansha’s algae-powered reactors purify industrial wastewater—zero chemicals, zero waste!
Using sunlight and indigenous microalgae, her tech treats even highly polluted water in just 8–10 hours at Rs 10/KLD. The bonus? The algae transforms into valuable biofuel, animal feed & more.
Shouldn’t this be in every Indian state? Tell us the comments below.

When Nathan and his friends at The Mann School saw Delhi’s streets littered with trash, they didn’t just complain—they engineered a solution.
Meet the leak-proof, space-saving car dustbin designed by students to keep our "motherland" as clean as our homes. They’ve already distributed 500 bins for free!
If these students can redesign our habits, can we?
Would you use one in your car? Tell us in the comments below.

In Koriya, Chhattisgarh, malnutrition wasn’t a statistic—it was a crisis.
But IAS officer Chandan Sanjay Tripathi fought back with a simple, traditional weapon: the laddoo.
By empowering local women to hand-roll nutrient-rich "Modaks" for expectant mothers, she slashed low birth weight cases by 57%.
This wasn't just a health initiative; it was a revolution of care and dignity.
Does India need more grassroots heroes like her? Comment below!

She made India the world’s 2nd-largest sugarcane producer, yet history barely remembers her.
Dr Janaki Ammal, the first Indian woman with a PhD in Botany, created sweeter, high-yield sugarcane that ended our dependence on imports.
Facing caste and gender discrimination, she moved abroad, leaving a legacy in every grain of sugar.
A Padma Shri awardee, she’s the unsung botanist who sweetened a nation.

I’m fascinated by Dr. Shubha V. Iyengar because she literally helps planes land through fog while most of us are learning to move through metaphorical fog.
Topper in BSc & MSc, backed by parents who encouraged her interest in science when girls rarely were inspired to pursue it.
40+ years at CSIR–NAL & she led the team that developed Drishti, built for India’s fog, rain, dust, and uncertainty.
When the world feels unclear, remember: someone built systems so others could land safely.

Uttarakhand burned for 5 days—and we barely noticed.
1,600 forest fires. Almost no snow. No rain.
Across the Himalayas, snow is disappearing.
Kashmir saw 40% less snowfall. Ladakh, 70%.
This is a snow drought—and it affects us all.
This one family planted 70,000 trees. Inspiring.
But saving our mountains needs everyone.
How do we bring back the snow? ❄️🌲Tell us in the comments below.

Mr. Chang’s story is incredibly poignant.
At 94, his dedication to his craft is a reminder of why we should value artisanship over assembly lines.
I’m reaching out to friends in Kolkata to connect with him.
I want to buy a signed piece at a premium (perhaps with a fabric tag saying “Made by C.H. Chang?”)
Not out of sympathy, but because his work is a rare treasure
Let’s ensure his festive season secures his year-round income.
An autographed Mr. Chang original is a legacy worth owning.

This winter, the Himalayas are calling. Not for selfies. Not for snowball fights. But for help.
Since 2016, Healing Himalayas Foundation has been walking miles, clearing what we carelessly discard, building recycling facilities, and teaching communities to protect this fragile ecosystem.
Over 2,000 tonnes of waste have been removed, and Material Recovery Facilities have been set up in remote areas.
This winter, The Better India, in collaboration with Healing Himalayas Foundation, invites you to be part of this change.
₹500 = 50 kg of trash removed. Every bag cleared protects rivers, slopes, wildlife, and the homes of thousands.
Don’t just travel to the Himalayas. Heal them.

India is the world’s 2nd-largest sugarcane producer.
But the woman who made it possible slipped into the footnotes of our history.
Hers is an extraordinary story of courage, ambition and service.
She is an outstanding role model for all young Indian women.
Yet how many children today could name her in a GK quiz?
Unsung heroes, especially women scientists, should not remain unsung.

They were born in villages where nobody expected them to dream big.
They grew up in silence, learning cricket not by sight but by sound.
And yet, on a warm Sunday evening in Colombo, India’s blind women’s cricket team lifted the first-ever Women’s Blind T20 World Cup.
At the heart of this triumph is Deepika TC — a girl from rural Karnataka, who lost partial vision as a baby, helped her family in the fields, and found a new identity in cricket.
Today, she stands tall as India’s first T20 World Cup-winning captain in women’s blind cricket, leading a team that never let circumstances define them.
Every hug, every brush of hands, every voice calling out in unison that day was a reminder: they were champions long before the trophy came home.
This isn’t just a win in cricket. It’s a victory of perseverance, belief, and proof that light always finds a way—even in the dark.
