This is an AI appreciation post 🫡 I am part of a volunteering group in Vizag called Speaking Chalk, founded by the awesome @SandhyaGodey. We work with govt / aided schools, and a group of us spend an hour or more each week teaching the kids English, communication, behavioural skills, help with Saturday activities, and whatever else is requested by the school. We also try to provide for any small infra requirements the school may have. The school we work with this year has run into a teacher shortage. They already have a few volunteers pitching in, and they asked if in addition to communication, we could also take up a subject each to augment their overworked teaching staff. I've been asked to help with Social Studies for class 10. Now, since last year, AP State Govt syllabus is the same as NCERT, and the social studies text books are quite broad-ranging. Even CBSE schools are finding it difficult to complete that vast syllabus. After a couple of classes, I realised there simply isn't enough time to cover all of it and then revise etc - especially since the NCERT English is of a high standard and just understanding the words will take up all the available time for students who have largely been brought up on Telugu and now have to write public exams in English. So I turned to @perplexity_ai, thanks to the Pro account given by Airtel. AP State Govt has given a model paper in which the number of marks and types of questions from each chapter are clearly outlined. Using that, Perplexity became my teaching assistant, and broke down the whole syllabus into actionable class plans, with study notes, points to remember, and a 1-2 page synopsis of each chapter to be handed out. It took some time for the AI to understand my needs, I kept tweaking it after classes with feedback, and then we hit off beautifully! We've completed 4 chapters out of 6 in history, the students also have gotten into the groove adapting to this study pattern, and I'm sure they'll score decently in their upcoming public examination. Plus, Perplexity has helped me conduct chapter-wise tests based on the Govt-prescribed model paper! Will use it in creation of multiple mock tests and quizzes once the syllabus is over so the learning is reinforced 💪🏼 This is but one example! There must be thousands of teachers out there using AI to improve their students' understanding of the subject matter. And this is just the beginning! AI in education is a fantastic tool, full of possibilities 🤩🤩🤩
