Social media is a major threat to the fact-based debate which functioning democracies depend upon. The market isn’t sorting it out- governments need to do so.

Social media co’s profit from letting this stuff rip unchecked, claiming it’s free speech & not their responsibility.
It’s possible to have free speech without handing a megaphone to those trying to mislead people & then profiting from the crowd who gather to listen.

This new study is fascinating & relevant to politics as well as vaccines.
Misleading social media posts in the ‘grey zone’ between truth & outright falsehood are seen more than those flagged as false and have much more impact (the study estimates 46x).

@EmilyKerr36 Emily you’re better than this v selective / self-serving representation of truth. In 6-7 months the City has gone from 1 independent, to 11 (Gaza resignations from Labour, none elected as indy) to 4 elected on anti-traffic-policy ticket, covering the entirety of Cowley LTNs.

@ReconnectingOx @LabourOxon ‘Practically everyone’ among those who spend their time tweeting about this does not mean practically everyone in the real world. Many residents want to see moderate, practical improvements to the LTNs.

Maybe if @LabourOxon bring back the LTN motion to the next council meeting, they can reflect on the fact that practically everyone (pro and anti LTN) didn't like what was on offer.
They've now got just two council meetings before the next city elections to pick an LTN "side".

The council chair (Felix Bloomfield, Con, Benson & Cholsey) says there “isn’t enough time to do the next motion justice” with just 35 minutes remaining. He’s called the meeting to a halt. That means the Labour motion on LTNs has also been guillotined.

@LabourOxon is calling on @OxfordshireCC to make changes to the LTNs to address congestion & respond to residents’ concerns. This includes re-opening Littlemore Rd to local traffic outside school travel hours as the Littlemore councillors have been asking for.

Does anyone know of a local bus performance dashboard for Oxford?- eg journey times, % of journeys cancelled for a given route in a given time period. The data all exists in Traveline.org.uk & data.bus-data.dft.gov.uk but requires membership, API & analysis skills.

As a City Councillor, I don’t have a vote on tomorrow’s motion on LTNs @OxfordshireCC, but I’d ask County colleagues to consider people living in places like Denny Gardens, in Littlemore. I’m not sure how many LibDem or Green County Cllrs have been there… 🧵

@SandyDouglas_ @OxfordshireCC My mother lives in that street. I live in Temple Cowley. We are both affected in some way by the LTN's. Littlemore is difficult to exit at the busy RH roundabout and Newman Road. It's like they have been cut off from the rest of the area and forgotten about.

@tonybrett @OxfordshireCC The trouble at the moment is that there’s no investment in doing those things. If Littlemore was better connected in other ways, Littlemore/ Crowell Rd would be less important. I think our response to the anpr consultation said our stance would change if alternatives improved.

@tonybrett @OxfordshireCC I agree the railway is a big contributor to the geographical isolation of the are, and I agree it could be mitigated in other ways, and I’m doing what I can to push those too. I spent 20 minutes stumbling around in brambles looking at feasibility of those routes 10 days ago!
