Local authorities have become drunk on power, using so-called Experimental (because they aren't) Traffic Regulation Orders to force through mass road closures - with almost no checks or balances to reign them in. We're calling on the @transportgovuk to bin them. #AbolishETROs

Given that the A40, Marsh Lane and London Road are routinely heaving with year-round hospital traffic, a cable car from a new park and ride site direct to the John Radcliffe Hospital might actually reduce traffic in the city. It's all too evidence-based for OCC to even consider.

Oxfordshire County Council is coining it with congestion charge penalty fares..especially in the city centre, where visitors won't be familiar with the scheme. This is what congestion charge signage looks like on the approach to the Hythe Bridge Street cash cow. Sorry, filter.

Oxfordshire County Council (shortly leaving Twitter because being called out and constantly ratioed doesn't fit with the Poundshop Davos image) has been busy.

You'd think regular traffic counts, which can distinguish between cars and other vehicles, would marry up with congestion charge numbers on the same roads at the same times on the same days. But apparently they don't - so we're exploring why. Something's wrong. More to follow...

Your periodic reminder that Oxfordshire County Council is so clueless about congestion that it installed congestion charge points in locations that never had constant congestion. Displaced traffic ended up making congestion worse in the suburbs, where congestion was always bad.

@ReconnectingOx @markchristie I bet this "independent" assembly was riddled with councillor mates like Scott Urban, Danny Yee, OLS, Cyclox, OPA and CoHSAT zealots. They'd only be admitted if they came up with the "right" ideas...

Fair. The Oxford citizens assembly on transport was a farce. It didn't stick to its own terms of reference. The advisory panel was stuffed with public sector and lobbyists. Opponents were given a token speaking slot, and then asked to leave. They were not allowed to debate.

Mark Wallace@wallaceme

It's a good rule of thumb that anyone suggesting a "citizen's assembly" or "people's assembly" to decide anything "deliberatively" wants it to be controlled by and/or composed of themselves and people who agree with them, in order to produce a conclusion that they already want.

@JohnJohnStewart Here's the Oxford approach to pollution monitoring, as we discovered in an in-depth report. The relevant ministries and QUANGOs weren't interested in holding anyone to account for this questionable approach to evaluation.

This is gold dust! It reveals LTNs in Lambeth, the London borough that is covered with them, don't even work in their own terms and that neighbouring Wandsworth, which removed its 7 Covid LTNs, has less congestion, emissions & road casualties. youtube.com/watch?v=kjRBMM…

This resonates with the questionable approach to LTN monitoring used by Oxfordshire County Council. And that's being polite. Namely: measuring traffic and pollution levels on roads you've blocked off with planters (and not adjacent roads, now taking the displaced traffic).
West Dulwich Action Group@WDulwichAction

Lambeth residents: The elections are two months today. This video does a good job of explaining a. how LTNs do more harm than good, b) how Lambeth’s LTN measurement is completely inadequate. Please share to make this an election issue youtu.be/kjRBMMceZJ0?si… #lambeth #ltn

@markchristie @eastoxbusiness @OxonTories *especially* the officers. A big clear out, saving millions each year, would actively make like better for hundreds of thousands of people. These numpties are paid handsomely to introduce measures that few but their activist mates actually want.

@eastoxbusiness @ReconnectingOx @OxonTories Yep. I'm afraid I see the Tories as 'more of the same'. Hard to forget they started it all with blanket Turkey Thirties and 'Connecting Oxford'. It's a pity - there are a lot of votes to be had by ignoring the vocal anti-car activists (and officers).

It's been fun watching Oxford Labour u-turn on its past support for traffic filters, ZEZ expansion and workplace parking levy. But let's remember the Greens are now vying with the LibDems to be the most batshit anti-car party. Vote indie, if possible. greenoxford.com/policy/better-…

@IndieChris71 They've said precious little about improving Oxford's crappy cycling and walking infrastructure - *heaven forfend* challenging the university to open up its vast city centre land to bikes? The bus companies blamed the LTNs for wrecking their service, so that policy is duff too.

@ReconnectingOx Imagine thinking that prioritising cleaner, healthier and less congesting forms of transport such as walking, cycling and buses in an ancient city that wasn't designed for modern traffic means you're 'batshit anti-car'

@markchristie @OxonTories They're pretty anti the traffic filters but a bit wobbly on the ZEZ expansion. And they've not really come down hard against the WPL either. They're definitely anti LTN. 6/10.

@ReconnectingOx Have @OxonTories actually rowed back formally on their 'Connecting Oxford' policies? Not a pokey question - I just haven't seen a formal change in policy announced although there's certainly an implied shift.

Have you switched off the congestion charge, @OxfordshireCC ? Seeing as you have now made it impossible to travel from North Oxford to Marston and Headington without passing a congestion charge permit checkpoint?
