Both Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani and PUK President Bafel Talabani have issued statements offering condolences over the death of Iran’s Ali Khamenei. The two statements are broadly similar in tone. Both use restrained language and call for peace and dialogue. As expected, neither mentions the United States or Israel. Interestingly, a third statement from Kurdistan Socialist Party leader Muhammad Haji Mahmoud is far more explicit, describing his assassination as a “crime by the US and Israel.” By contrast, since the war began, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has been entirely absent from public view, with no recorded activity even in the social media. Masoud Barzani has also remained out of sight, though he has posted unrelated condolence messages on social media. Nechirvan Barzani, meanwhile, spoke by phone yesterday with Syria’s foreign minister. Bafel Talabani yesterday appeared in Baghdad for a meeting with Iraqi leaders and issued a separate statement calling for Kurdish unity, especially with the KDP, to protect Kurdistan and Iraq and keep them “distanced from the war.”
