@ARoseCasey Bravo, Rose! This is so important! And long overdue. And you're spot on about the Alumni and the broader community. That's the sticking point.

Abortion restrictions will exacerbate hardships for teens of color; bisexual teens; teens who live in low-income families; and teens who live in the South, who are at higher risk of unintended pregnancy, according to a new @ChildTrends blog. buff.ly/3Eu5GgF

@AlisoninV @VermontDCF So sad that's what it took but shows the power of the press. So many states have moved the money out faster. 🙄😒

Postscript (from @VermontDCF) to my article yesterday about childcare providers having to front retention bonus money: "The Child Development Division has secured permission to offer the option of sending Child Care Workforce Retention Bonuses as an advance payment." #vtpoli

One more example of how child care is broken. Our child care workers provide critical care and deserve to be well compensated.
Dan Wuori@DanWuori

Today’s @washingtonpost editorial on the #childcare crisis includes this sad factoid from the Bureau of Labor Statistics: America’s child care professionals make, on average, 59 cents less per hour than its DOG WALKERS. Let that sink in.

@MatthewAKraft I did some work on teacher perceptions and struggles during the opioid epidemic in WV. Was difficult to get it published but showed how ill equipped teachers were to deal with student issues as a consequence of individual and community trauma

2/ And if you're in #morgantown and following the pride flags in schools debate, I think we can agree that inclusion and acceptance helps. Pride flags aren't political @WilliamKyleVass @ACLU_WV

1/ And if you're in #wv and are concerned about LGBTQ supports in schools note that WV has the WORST rates of suicide attempt in the US. Almost a third reported attempting suicide.

@ChildTrends’ new brief finds that BIPOC & LGBTQ youth & youth with disabilities who report experiences of discrimination are at a higher risk of suicide than their peers. A thread. buff.ly/3xWaozC

@WilliamKyleVass I was on the board and agreed - speakers were rarely warned of anything other than to adhere to the time and being redundant.

The Board President is confirming 37 people are here to speak. He also issues a warning about potential defamation and encourages people to consult with legal counsel if they are unsure. (First time I’ve heard this sorta wanting at a meeting.)

We’re live at the Morgantown Board of Education meeting where they’ll be discussing Policy 3231.01: Participation in political activities (the one that may or not prohibit the display of Pride flags in classrooms)

@weilanch @CSCCEUCB So true. Seems like a steep hill to climb which makes me feel stick. But great studies and data like yours are the way to start the systems change.

@SaraAndCDprof @CSCCEUCB Thanks,@SaraAndCDprof. IMO it’s less about changing which setting parents pick & more about making sure CBOs get what they need. For that to happen, we need to measure setting differences more consistently so we can act on inequities at the policy level.

@weilanch @CSCCEUCB Super important and great conversation starter. What about the issues in number of hours of care? CBOs typically cover more hours so working parents send them there. Unless schools can do the same, seems this will persist.

But policies in these systems historically have placed CBOs at disadvantage – what @CSCCEUCB's Marcy Whitebook has long called “the two-tier system” problem. Limited empirical research has documented these inequities + their implications for programs, kids, and teachers.

What if instead of having to wait for those long term benefit estimates we can estimate from ongoing cost benefit studies that are confirming them? A paper lead by @TimBartik makes those estimates and arguments with Tulsa Pre-K. Link in comments
Equitable Growth@equitablegrowth

When evaluating income support programs, @HilaryHoynes, @LlerasMuney, and Anna Aizer argue in a new paper that economists and policymakers alike have paid too much attention to costs in the short term—and not enough to the benefits over the long run. equitablegrowth.org/budget-analyse…
