The Fox of Greenwich Village walked down to the coffee shop. He hadn't slept. The worst had happened. The owner usually sung opera as he worked. Today, he wasn't even there, just one of his children, who looked tired. The Fox sat at his favourite seat and thought about what had happened, but he couldn't frame the pieces in his mind, they mismatched and refused to cohere. The door opened and shut, orders were made, first cigarettes lit. He thought about the smallness of his life, his music, his writing, his apartment, and wondered what anyone could do. He sighed and put his head in his paws. "No, no, no. Don't despair, don't give up," said a voice suddenly behind him, an old badger who'd been sitting at the counter, a professor he'd seen around from time to time, at poetry readings and parties. "We become the light, now, Fox, we become the light, the fire, the unquenchable flame, the kindling hope. There is no-one else. Remember that, we are all that will hold the line, there is no-one else." And with that, the badger paid his bill, picked up his stick and was gone, into the heavy autumn light, into the push and bustle of the street, without even waiting for a reply.

@llanelligirlie @oldandrewuk Even that’s not true. Most middle schoolers have a teacher they believe hates them. Usually it’s the teacher trying the hardest to help them learn, teaching them how to struggle with a difficult concept, or just their least favorite subject matter teacher.

@oldandrewuk I would adjust that to “kids don’t learn from a person they believe doesn’t like them” Teachers are not meant to be friends but it makes a massive difference if they are welcoming and make kids feel like the teacher is happy to see them and enjoys teaching them

"Kids don't learn from people they don't like". Of course, they do. We all do. And it would not be remotely realistic to expect every child to like every teacher.

@_RachelTerry_ @oldandrewuk Same. I didn’t like my 10th grade English teacher. Years later I remember what I learned from her class and use it often! And I remember her more fondly!

@JonathanAKRolfe @josie_halles @oldandrewuk A bad teacher and a disliked teacher are not synonymous. A lot of the ways to be liked by students are actually bad teaching. Building trust based relationships with students does help them learn. Being popular among students is not the same.

@MatRyanELATeach A lot of principals I’ve met see books as a waste of time that distracts from test prep. Which tells you a lot about the quality of people we’re promoting to principals.

Standardized testing does not inhibit the teaching of books. In fact, if students are reading a lot of high quality books in English class, they'll be more than well-prepared for anything the test might ask.

@MichellePraiz @MendoTriplett I think he’s trying to kill her. She literally could die from getting the wrong food. He’s creating a situation where she either doesn’t eat or she makes more. Easy for her to make a mistake or get gluten contamination. Then he can shrug and say it was her own fault.

@MendoTriplett What the internet has shown me too often is women who know their man is awful but after complaining, they run back to defend him when people make comments that upset him.

@XianJaneway I hear you. The demand for moms, especially moms of disabled children, to be super heroes with no needs of our own is so destructive.

With a child who could die if you screw it up. And trying EVERY DAY to live, "according to God's will for your life." Just imagine doing that for 20+ years, day in & day out. Then, try & judge me, or tell me what I could have done differently. 🖖

This fucking infuriates me. Not because it doesn't work--it does! But I couldn't exactly build fires & roast marshmallows with my kids because I was working 2 jobs, one of which required me to be awake at 3am. You people expect brilliant ADHD management skills from moms when

@rpondiscio All curriculum has to be modified for the particular students in each class especially if they have IEPs. No preset system will be 💯 perfect for every kid.

@sacwriter Well, that’s kind of the point isn’t it? You don’t need or want their line. You don’t need their permission to speak or their mic to do it. And that terrifies them. They have no power over you.

@NeurologistMom Went to ER twice because of elevated heart rate and shortness of breath lasting days and weeks. Was told it was just a panic attack. My heart stopped on the way to the hospital the third time. Multiple pulmonary embolisms and one three inch clot holding open my heart valve.

I remember the time when I gave birth to my daughter. They had to keep me in the hospital for 10 days because I wasn’t feeling well. Every time I tried to stand up, I fainted. At one point, I even stopped breathing, according to my husband. He panicked and called a friend who was a cardiologist. The friend’s response was, “You know, sometimes our wives just want attention because they’re going through a hard time.” My husband got angry and insisted that someone be sent to check on me. When the resident came, my husband simply said, “Just watch.” He helped me stand up, and I don’t remember what happened next. When I regained consciousness, I saw a room full of doctors around me, all in a panic because I had stopped breathing again. That’s when they realized it wasn’t just an “attention-seeking” move. Why am I telling you this? I’m not sure—maybe because I feel that many women, especially those with chronic and complicated illnesses, have had similar experiences. If you want to share yours, quote this with #MedicalMisogyny.

I sat on my sofa & cried. Those of us w/ Narcissistic parents knew that we were in for suffering. We didn't know what *kind*, bc we couldn't possibly comprehend what COVID would bring. We just knew that life, as we understood it, was about to change for the worse.

I don’t think people understand how hard so many of us took the election results in 2016. That’s because the press only interviewed trump supporters. Sitting alone eating Doritos hits home to so many of us. You just never asked.

Is there a polite way to tell a coffee shop clerk/owner “I and probably others would work remotely from your fine establishment if the music was lower, but I can’t hear myself think, let alone do phone interviews and Zoom calls here”?

@FrederickMelo Sir. Be aware that everyone else in the coffee shop loathes your entitlement and wants you to leave. Your calls are interrupting *us.* Not the other way around.

@BornAt3B @RaychelNelsonwx 1) This has NOTHING to do with abortion LAWS. AGAIN, Which ACTUAL hospitals that provide OB services are refusing women with ectopic pregnancies treatment? 2) This says NOWHERE that ectopics will not be treated. Again, you are all LYING and fear mongering.
