🇺🇸🆚🇮🇷 The image captures the extraction of the WDU-42/B penetrator warhead from a U.S.-made AGM-158B JASSM-ER stealth cruise missile recovered in Iran. Weighing around 450 kg (1,000 lb), the WDU-42/B is a hardened penetrating warhead engineered to defeat fortified targets. It is specifically designed to strike reinforced concrete structures, hardened aircraft shelters, command-and-control facilities, bunkers, and other deeply protected military infrastructure.

@Jixijenga @FrezshDraws It is larger. Standard 12.7 fired from YakB-12.7 is around 54g and while heaviest NATO 50cals are around 25g and standard M33 ball is just 42g. So while 50cal rounds fly faster the muzzle energy is less than 12.7x108 API

@FrezshDraws It just has a longer case, it's not "larger" and is actually a teensy bit less hot than the .50 BMG.

@HowlingWildCard @WarMonitor3 That gun has 1400kg of force pushing backwards, even slight offset is enough to overcome person holding the gun steady. This isn't your standard heavy machine gun, there is a good reason why it is normally used on on fixed mounts

@Sarfanger @WarMonitor3 a slight offset doesn't mean the gun will helicopter like it was swatted by god, still. If anything, only a fraction of the energy goes rotatory, while the vast majority goes backwards, ie, not rotatory... and is still facing an opposite force, ie, the shooter.

Insane video of Russian anti aircraft gunner losing control of a YakB-12.7 heavy machine gun usually attached to a Mi-24 gunship but repurposed to shoot down drones.

@HowlingWildCard @WarMonitor3 It is YakB-12.7. Rotatory 12.7mm gun from Mi-24 gunship. And no, you can't slow it down because it uses recoil to cycle itself so speed at fires depends what round you shoot so RPM is between 4000-5000 RPM

@Sarfanger @WarMonitor3 what gun is that for that matter? It does look like it went 5krpm, but with no rotatory barrels? Everything that could reach that high RoF with a single barrel didn't catch up for obvious reliability issues. On top of what I said, the longer you analyze it, the more ai it is.

@TexAgg04 @WarMonitor3 My guess is it was to help with elevating and moving the gun to have the weight centered with that massive box full of ammo. But they didn't take into account the amount of energy from firing 5000RPM

@WarMonitor3 That’s some genuinely stereotypical Russian engineering. Who mounts a gun off center???? Like, of all the technology Russians stole from Americans you’d think mounting a gun on its center line would have been the easiest to steal.

@HowlingWildCard @WarMonitor3 Yes, but that is if the barrels are at center centered on the mount and are not slightly offset so it produces rotation. Especially if you fire 54g projectile 5000RPM

@TNVoteNoOn1 @414magyarbirds Can you imagine the environmental impact of sinking +20 oil ships? Ukraine still wants to get its land back and they don't want to spend next 20 years cleaning up the coast from Crimea to Mariupol along with all the dead sea and flying creatures from that oil spill.

@trombelone @HotSotin Also Srebrenica massacre as single act would probably not seen as genocide even though it fills many of the requirements. But it was part of larger systematic killing of Muslims while white terror was never that.

@trombelone @HotSotin Almost like it is not about the just numbers. Srebrenica massacre was part of wider atrocity against Bosnian Muslims. White terror in Finland at no point was meant to kill all reds or even big part of them.

@trombelone @HotSotin Genocide? 7 370 executed is a lot, but nowhere near genocide. Another 11 652 at POW camps because of malnourishment and diseases.

@Colbloodpro96 @nocturnal_noise Bullets don't need external oxygen to work. Modern smokeless powders are made from nitroglycerin that produces its own oxygen to keep the reaction going. So normal guns work in space they just suck because there is nothing to take away the heat from firing in vacuum

@nocturnal_noise Mabey the idea is that if ammunition is exposed to the vacuum of space the oxygen inside the cartrige would leak out which may lead to the ammo not firing, or not burning completely.

"Hey I know, let's make this ammo storage take up 50% more space, use +100% more material, give it rough edges to catch on things and fuck up your hand, and a big fuckoff handle suited for a machine gun all to pull out a tray of a mere 35 bullets." "This is a very smart use of resources in the space age where cargo capacity is relevant to literally everything." The 'haters' are right on this one. The art direction in this remaster is god awful.
ringoid@NotOrionLMAO

literally no point to packaging ammo like that, ESPECIALLY in a military context. the McLees knew this because of Rob McLee’s prior service history. the original design is based on reality.

@hw97karbine @Stu_Lyle Also I don't know much about 10.5cm TS round. I know they did introduce 10.5 the Hg.39 C round just for StuH to be used as the main AT round. It had slightly improved penetration but main advantage was that it was single piece unlike the other shells of the gun.

Easier to hit your targets with a high velocity 75mm I suppose I believe they actually made a "Treibspiegel" or APDS 105mm/75mm round that the StuH 42 could chamber (150mm/88mm shown for reference) with performance comparable to the Pak 40 That would have potentially allowed it to serve as a tank destroyer when necessary without sacrificing effective explosive shells

The requirement for an armoured assault gun still hasn't gone away. We just didn't prioritise it. Historically, for high intensity urban battles tanks get very heavy usage because of the difficulty in using artillery. Yet, tank cannons are not as effective as a purpose built assault gun and require the right types of ammunition.

@hw97karbine @Stu_Lyle Main reason why crews demanded the long barrel tanks more was how many times they ended up facing soviet tanks during normal operation as Assault guns. Also there was small advantage of bunker busting when using long 7.5cm but L/24 AP and HEAT we usually enough for that.

@hw97karbine @Stu_Lyle What I read they liked both the L/24,L/43 and L/48 versions a lot. L/24 was liked because how fast it was to load, shells were light and it had superior HE filler compare to later high velocity versions.

@hw97karbine @Stu_Lyle Artillery branch wanted the Jagdpanzer IV that was originally meant to be the replacement for Stug. It would have been ideal for them having thicker armor and the L48 for better bunker busting role with slightly weaker HE round.

@hw97karbine @Stu_Lyle Funny when you read crew reports saying crews didn't really care about the new 105. Effect per shot was better but most crews still proffered 7.5cm. And really Artillery didn't even want the 105, they were forced to use it so Panzerwaffe wouldn't steal their vehicles.

BREAKING: Images have emerged showing the recovery of an unexploded 1,000-lb (450-kg) WDU-42/B warhead from a U.S.-made AGM-158 JASSM cruise missile in Iran's Kurdistan Province. This is at least the third documented case of an intact WDU-42/B warhead being recovered from an AGM-158 JASSM cruise missile. #OperationEpicFury #OperationLionsRoar
