@MartinSLewis I would abolish interest on all plans along with as you suggest abolish the freeze on the level at which you start paying the loan! If I were to go a little further the Students should not pay for their education, it should be free. They in general terms pay it back through tax.

The govt's Student Loan Plan 2 repayment freeze in April 2027 must be reversed. It isn't moral. I'm concerned that my debate with Kemi Badenoch this morning distracts from the most immediate problem. In April 2027 Rachel Reeves will freeze the Plan 2 student loan threshold until 2030 which by then will increase graduate repayments by £300/yr more. This is effectively a unilateral negative breach of the student loan contract. Students were told the threshold would rise with average earnings. No commercial lender would be allowed to do this. The govt shouldn't do it either. Changing the terms of future students loans is a political decision - people may not like it but it is transparent. Negatively changing the terms of contracts already signed, and long in place, is a breach of natural justice.

@TheBMA @BMAResidents @wesstreeting consider writing off Student Loans from the start and paying the GMC fees for current and to be Resident Doctors. Bring this to the table during negotiations. Medicine Degree at university should be free for previous, current and new UK students.

It’s a YES. An overwhelming 93.4% of resident doctors in England have voted for further strike action, giving a clear mandate to continue pressuring the Government on jobs and pay in 2026. The overall turnout was 52.54%. Stay tuned for updates on our next steps.

Resident doctors in England have voted overwhelmingly to continue industrial action for another six months. This vote is about years of pay being eroded and a growing jobs crisis that’s leaving many fully trained doctors without work. Doctors are standing together to demand fair pay and more jobs to protect the future of the NHS. Read more 👇 thedoctor.bma.org.uk/articles/pay-c…

@MartinSLewis You could debate that crucial degrees should be similar to a degree apprenticeship where they are paid for completing the degree with a potential of a job at the end of it too. Medical degrees require a lot of on the job learning as part of the degree.

@MartinSLewis For me any crucial degree that provides essential service for the country should be free. The debate I guess is what is classed as crucial. Medical degrees, Law to begin the debate. I would also suggest any of these degrees should also write off legacy and present student loans.

@mattdb97 @MartinSLewis Hi Matt, apologies, I have not long seen this message. Our concern is our three daughters, two at uni at minute, will possibly be coming out of higher education with student loans over £120,000 and the interest being applied to the loans is frightening.

@MartinSLewis Bring back Student Grants. At the very least remove interest charges on Student Loans and the 9% repayment charge should be similar to salary sacrifice, that is no income tax or NI is paid on any repayment.

Tell Us: What law/regulation would u change to improve personal finances? A money-festo... This isn’t about polemic issues like double/scrap tax. I'm looking for small practical tweaks, similar to -stop mid-contract broadband prices rises -raise the Lifetime ISA property limit -make roaming firms tell you ‘what counts as a day’ when abroad All of which I've campaigned on. Pls write yours by reply & and we'll pick some to go on my podcast next week. And do LIKE THOSE YOU SUPPORT

Some of these are absolutely brilliant. I think I'm going to dedicate the whole podcast to them next week. Even then we'll only scratch the surface. PS People saying things like "increase personal allowances" - things like that are a deliberate political act. I'm looking more for clever ideas to improve lives that politicians haven't considered that we can put to them.

@MoneySavingExp If they abolished Student Loan interest rates, that would be a start! For me our children/young adults should not have to pay for their education. Generally university students pay higher taxes. The old system of grants worked.

Today's Twitter Poll: Should the amount of a student's living loan/support depend on their parents income? It works this way for most under 25s in Eng/Scot/NI Pros: Richer parents can & do afford to support them Anti: They're adults in every other way, why look at parents income This is all about the total amount of maintenance loan (in Eng) or loan & grant (Scot & NI) that students get from the State to support themselves / pay rent / costs whilst they're a student.

@MartinSLewis @itvMLshow @Jeremy_Hunt Student loan repayments. Loan forgiveness. Interest rate freezes. Raising the threshold. Anything to get student loan repayments on the agenda and front and centre. There are plenty of people whose repayments are bigger than their council tax bill, but it gets no coverage.

Do you have a consumer finance question to ask the Chancellor? As part of the first @itvMLshow of 2024, next Tue 9pm (not usual 8pm), I'll be interviewing @Jeremy_Hunt & I'd like your suggested questions. It isn't a political or economy show though, so I'm talking LISAs, child benefit, benefits, tax, mortgages, childcare help policy etc. Including brief info about how the question relates to your situation can be good too. Ask your question by reply here, and the team will collate, I'll try and cover the most common areas, though I only have 20mins, so apologies in advance for those I can't do.

@MartinSLewis @itvMLshow @Jeremy_Hunt What is he going to do for young people who are paying an extra 9% effective graduate tax as a result of student loans payments, only to see their debt rise. This is a huge financial burden and penalises middle earners who will end up paying the maximum over their career. Thanks

@MoneySavingExp For me our children should have the opportunity to a free university education. Graduates generally pay more tax after qualifying is my understanding through higher salaries in any case. At the very least there should be no interest on the Student Loans.

If you're from England or Wales and you started uni between 2012 and 2022, do you know how much you'll end up repaying? With student loan interest at 7.1%, you may be wondering whether to panic or pay it off. The answer might not be what you think... ➡️ moneysavingexpert.com/students/repay…
