NEST BOX UPDATE: Carolina Chickadees have set up shop in one of our nest boxes! Chickadees use moss as the base of their nest, so this is a cool look at the early stages. While this is not our target bird species, we will still place a nest cam once eggs are laid. Stay tuned!

And just like that, the chicks are staring to look like Chickadees!!!! Now 11 days old, the chicks not only have their big bird feathers, they are making BIG poos (aka fecal sacs). Watch to the end!

By the way, that white pouch you saw go back and forth at the end was a fecal sack (poop pouch) from one of the chicks. The sack allows for easy removal of excrement from the nest! (Though sometimes the parents straight up eat it for extra nutrients)

Carolina Chickadee chicks receive bi-parental care. This means that both parents participate in raising the offspring! Here you can see the chickadee mom and dad feeding the 6 day old nestlings. They are growing quickly!

Keeping the nest clean and in shape takes a lot of work. This Carolina Chickadee mother is clearly sparing no energy expense to keep it tidy. Sometimes you really just have to get in there.

Sometimes the food is too big, but you just can't stop trying! This footage was from yesterday, April 13th. Despite the size of this food item, the mother eventually successfully fed to one of the chicks. It's surprising how much they can eat in one mouthful! #CarolinaChickadee

The Carolina Chickadee chicks are growing so quickly! They are now 4 days old and are starting to develop feathers on their head (😂) and wings. You can even see the slit where their eyes will eventually open!
