While Latvia stands firmly and unconditionally with Ukraine in the war, it has not halted trade with Russia: in 2025, Latvian exports to Russia still reached over €962 million, with roughly half coming from alcohol (especially whisky). Russia ranked as Latvia’s 6th largest export partner, and the volume has only dropped about 19-20% since the pre-war peak of nearly €1.2 billion in 2021. Despite strong rhetorical support for Ukraine, only 36% of Latvians back a full trade ban with Russia and Belarus, while the government argues that much of the flow is “transit” from other EU countries — and a unilateral ban on items like alcohol would simply reroute through neighbors with little real impact on Moscow.

During the competition week of the Olympic Games, I also watched a film featuring Mr. Stiller in one of the lead roles. In those days, when all the chaos surrounding the scandal was unfolding, it meant the world to me to see support from this legendary actor, and I am deeply grateful to him for that. But I am even more grateful for his solidarity with our country, for his support of the people affected by the war. 🇷🇺🇺🇦 A man at a Ukrainian TCC recruitment office secretly filmed a video of agents beating a recently mobilized man.

Draft officers pepper-sprayed a young man while he was sitting in his car in Odesa. He burst out of the vehicle and tried to run for his life, but they caught up with him. All of it unfolded to the outraged cries of passersby, who watched the scene in shock and anger.

In Lutsk, a woman tried to stop draft officers from abducting her man. She clung to the recruiters’ car, but fell and hit the asphalt hard.

⚡️⚡️⚡️As a communicator, I know every word in politics carries explosive weight — it can build bridges for peace or burn them down. Today, those truly seeking an end to the war push for a realistic peace deal. Yet radicals who fear any negotiation scream “appeasement!” and “capitulation!” In diplomacy, calling any pragmatic compromise “appeasement” is deliberate sabotage: it poisons the atmosphere, blocks dialogue, and traps both sides in endless fighting by framing any commpromises as betrayal. The same goes for “capitulation” — it’s manipulative language designed to exploit fears and radical complexes, turning any attempt at a negotiated settlement into supposed national humiliation rather than a hard but vital step toward ending the bloodshed. Real peace requires tough talks, not slogans that make talks impossible.
