My take on what’s happening in South Africa: No country in the world operates without immigration laws, and every nation has the right to regulate who enters and stays within its borders. Wanting proper immigration control or calling for immigration reform is not xenophobia. However, the problem begins when the focus shifts from addressing undocumented immigration to targeting all African immigrants regardless of their legal status. Enforcing the law should never turn into discrimination or hostility toward people simply because of where they come from. There is a difference between protecting borders and promoting prejudice — and we must be careful not to confuse the two.
