The Secret Mission of the "20 Nightingales".
Shortly after Tanganyika (now Tanzania) gained independence in 1961, British nurses resigned and left the country in droves, refusing to work under an African-led government.
Facing an immediate healthcare crisis, Nyerere personally reached out to Tambo for assistance.ĺ
Despite the ANC operating under severe underground restrictions back home, Tambo coordinated a covert operation to recruit and smuggle 20 South African nurses (popularly known as the "20 Nightingales") out of apartheid South Africa to staff and run Tanzanian hospitals.

The Crucible of the 1969 Morogoro Conference.
Tanzania was the backdrop for the most critical turning point of the ANC in exile. In 1969, facing immense internal tension and frustration from cadres who felt the leadership was stagnating (including a young Chris Hani), Tambo convened the Morogoro Conference in Tanzania.
Under Nyerere’s diplomatic umbrella, Tambo resigned his leadership to allow for a democratic vote, was immediately re-elected by consensus, and opened up ANC membership to non-African revolutionaries for the first time, fundamentally redefining the struggle's strategy.

NEW: "It was never fair to me that we would be guarding the strait when we basically don't take anything."
President Trump says Gulf leaders backed his decision to drop a proposed fee tied to the Strait of Hormuz in favor of securing major investment in the U.S.
"They said, 'We'd love to do it a different way. We'd love to invest in the United States with billions and billions of dollars.'"
Trump says the Gulf states will invest "a tremendous amount of money" in the U.S., adding, "I don't think anybody should be able to charge a fee for the Strait... I think it's actually much better."

NEW: President Trump says he will replace the 20% "Reimbursement Fee" in the Strait of Hormuz with trade and investment deals that "various Gulf States" will be making into the U.S., after "highly productive" conversations with Middle East leadership.
"The Strait of Hormuz is open to ALL Ship traffic except for Iran — and that is because of their lying, violent, malicious leadership, which is taking them down the path of TOTAL DESTRUCTION. We will therefore have a FULL Blockade, but only on Ships coming to and from Iranian ports, or carrying anything have to do with Iranian cargo."

@BRICSinfo It’s a fascinating geopolitical puzzle: Why does a nation with the immense wealth of Saudi Arabia still rely so heavily on importing military hardware instead of manufacturing its own ?

The boiling point was the famous "Hani Memorandum", a highly critical open letter co-signed by a young Chris Hani and five other cadres. It accused the Lusaka-based leadership of being out of touch, undemocratic, and suffering from personal failures. The leadership initially suspended Hani and the other signatories, which nearly triggered a mutiny among the ranks. Tambo called the Morogoro Conference specifically to confront this "deep-going malaise".
