If you day trade the wider ranges has been very nice. A lot on fin twit are position traders and lecture others. I asked one person and they have only taken 3 trades since June lol. Trade both ways short and long. Better skill involved.

@BlacklionCTA Only Jackson Hole I can remember that was somewhat big was August 2022 - market sold off hard on Powells tough talk then. We will see if 4 years later "whatever it takes" still matters to the Fed

@shawngorham Yes a standing desk is worth it. I have one from an old office building, so looks corporate office, but it does the job. Versa Tables - they come fully assembled just have to attach roller caster wheels.

@bclund Some are stubborn. But we all had to learn through getting our tails kicked. After I blew a few piles of money I learned over a decade ago the best loss is the fast and small one. Never argue with predefined stop or under a declining MA (brian shannon work / vwap)

I sincerely wish that I could convince each new crop of traders that trees don't grow to the sky. But it's a lesson each individual has to learn on their own, just like I did.

BLOODY JULY: CYCLES - COMPETITION - CROWDING april... may... june was a continual tweet storm of "market's flat and my book is up 10% a day." That trade is now running in reverse....HARD. Everyone is speculating on why the DISPERSION TRADE is inverting If I had to simplify investing (hard to do!)... it would be this... focus on 3 things CYCLE, COMPETITION, and CROWDING. Rates, valuations, fed liquidity, admin tweets... all important, but a distraction from the most important things THE CYCLE: we are in an AI supercycle. You see it everywhere. The market is an amazing discounting mechanism... it discounted the run in chips, then energy names, then the bottlenecks, and it was right each time. The mistake... is losing sight of the cycle while you drag right on your Excel model. The only question right now is... WHERE ARE WE IN THE EARNINGS CYCLE? If you don't have a forward view on that for every name you own.. Its VERY hard to fight with the quants on price... and when price action and your views disagree? manage risk... you can always add it back... doubling down is masochistic unless you have a clear catalyst or a Goggins level pain tolerance COMPETITION: this is the BIG one. Competition is the multiple killer. One of the smartest tech investors I know taught me this, and people ignore it, until it's too late. It wasn't OAI vs ANT... they were both winning...historic ARR of $100bn+ I mean com on.... the tell? OPEN SOURCE picking up real steam in June is my read....govt, models, training costs... noise. Competition WIDENS the distribution of outcomes. That pressures margins and future FCF, and none of it shows up in the model today... so the market discounts the wider distribution now. I hear you on Jevons paradox, more compute is needed, etc. But when OUTCOMES get WIDER, multiple compress. Full stop. CROWDING: the trickiest of the three...takes a real mosaic approach. I believe we were at EXTREME crowding in the AI trade... hedge funds, single managers, retail p&l shots, 2-3x ETF launches, international speculative gamblers. GROSSES and NETS were at highs when Korea RAISED THE PRICE OF BUYING SAMSUNG (see my June tweet). Think about that for a second, then look at the stock (or any of the bottleneck bro stocks). They were clearly worried. Crowding has always been the elusive factor for quants... hard to quantify, hard to get data on, hard to manage, because you have to invert your worldview for 2/6/10 weeks on a gut read that a lot of other people are about to be forced sellers... I think of it more as a sliding scale, the more crowded something is... the more I am scaling out of it What are my rules? 1 of 3... yellow flag... Manage risk 2 of 3... red flag... Move your feet 3 of 3... break glass... Get smaller and reassess everything The questions for you now: 1 - where are we in the EARNINGS CYCLE? 2 - have multiples compressed enough to take on the risk of wider outcomes in the future? 3 - where are we on CROWDING? And... don't forget... the 3 work the other way too... when they line up? gotta be able to hit the gas pedal. Stay safe out there. Mange risk.

@TheFlowHorse Some learn the hard way, can’t say I would lose $24 million . U can always get back in a trade. Sad to see. I lost a few 100k. Ur years ago and now small losses are best can’t stand round tripping gains , never again

It should have came sooner, but this is where you give yourself the risk manager tap on the shoulder and close the screens for a long time. Reminds me of Michael Platt’s take: “I don’t have any tolerance for trading losses. I hate losing money more than anything. Losing money is what kills you. Not the actual loss. The fact that it messes up your psychology."
