I find this is a great place for opinions but a poor platform for debate

How the world works in a nutshell: giant corporations profit from an illegal war whilst the governments who wage them tell the rest of us to tighten our belts.
Politics UK@PolitlcsUK
🚨 BREAKING: British oil and gas giant BP has more than doubled profits due to the Iran war - from $1.38bn to $3.2bn
English

@TimBrowning @KathrynPorter26 Because gas is used to fill the gaps caused by wind/solar you muppet
English

A reminder of what wind power actually looks like...
We have 32 GW installed, hence the size of the scale on the y-axis
Over the weekend output fell to 0.6 GW - this happened overnight when demand was low but when solar output was zero - so functionally we had no wind or solar on the grid
The length of the lull when wind was below 3.2 GW (a tenth of the installed amount) was far longer than any battery can bridge)
THIS is why wind and solar do not provide energy security. In the winter periods of zero solar are longer and coincide with times of peak demand, not just for the day but for the year

What was supposed to be a fun night at the @WHCA dinner with President Trump delivering jokes and celebrating free speech was hijacked by a depraved crazy person who sought to assassinate the President and kill as many top Trump administration officials as possible.
I was with President Trump and the First Lady back stage after we were quickly ushered to safety by Secret Service.
President Trump was truly fearless, but as he said last night, this political violence needs to end.
Thank you to law enforcement for keeping all of us safe, including the brave agent who took a bullet to the chest and immediately moved to neutralize the shooter.
Pray for our country.

@Planet_F1 Looks like the cage did its job. Happens at every event, but of a non story

@toobaffled Cancer is predominantly an age related disease, which does not mean it can’t afflict a young person, but as with all disease, the better the diagnostic tools the more you find. Like all conspiracy nuts you confuse correlation and causation.
English

UK cancer cases just hit a record high … one diagnosis every 80 seconds.
Cancer Research UK says it’s mostly because of an ‘ageing population’ and obesity.
Meanwhile, young people are getting cancers that used to be rare… but sure, nothing to see here.
Coincidence or something they don’t want to talk about?
What do you think is really driving this surge? 🔥

@QuetzalPhoenix @TrentTelenko English -> England, clue is in the name. Carlos that notices things, missed the bleeding obvious

But the English are not officially considered "native" to England.

This door in Westminster Abbey is older than most modern nation-states. Made in the 1050s from an English oak, it's the only surviving Anglo-Saxon door in Britain.
English

@JohnAll50690792 @latimeralder And on the dull / still days? You sit at home with a candle?
English

@latimeralder Firstly we don’t need 1:1 fossil fuel backup and the amount is decreasing all the time. Secondly we are paying for total capacity not 2 complete redundant systems so we aren’t paying double. Wind and solar pollute less and cost less. Hope that helps
English

@latimeralder Agree you need 1:1 backup, but it could be battery & nuclear. A more complex issue is momentum/frequency stabilisation. Fossil fuels, nuclear and to some extent batteries are good at this, wind/solar not so much
English

@rawespresso If you worked 50 years you have other retirement income. Also, for the record (again) you don’t “pay into a system”, you pay tax
English

@Arron_banks The way you cherry pick statistics with no context is typical of Reforms lack of reality

@IsabelOakeshott “Deport 2m”. You’re supporting something close to civil war

Trump Saved Eight Iranian Women From Execution. Except He Probably Didn’t.
Here’s what we know. Eight Iranian women were arrested during the January protests. Some faced serious charges. A few were already out on bail weeks before Trump typed a single word. Iran’s own judiciary said none of them were ever facing the death penalty.
And yet. There was Trump on Truth Social, chest out, announcing that he personally intervened and stopped a mass execution. Iran “respected his request.” Lives were saved. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
It’s like a man who walks past a house fire, notices the fire trucks already there, and immediately calls a press conference to announce he put it out.
To be fair, two of the women do appear to have been released. That’s genuinely good. Nobody is arguing women should rot in Iranian prisons for throwing rocks at a protest. But the gap between “some detainees were processed through the Iranian legal system” and “I, Donald J. Trump, personally stopped a mass execution tonight” is roughly the size of the Persian Gulf.
Iran called it fabricated. Human rights groups pointed out the timeline doesn’t add up. A refugee with actual knowledge of how the IRGC operates noted there is no verifiable evidence behind any of it.
None of that will matter, of course. The headline is already written. The clip is already running on Fox. Karoline Leavitt has already told America that only Trump could have saved these beautiful women.
He didn’t save them. But he’ll be dining out on it for months.

@danielisdizzy @TrentTelenko This is as sensible as Musk calling for multi-planetary life because the sun will explode. The Fed deals with the economy today not as it might be in the future. This BS is a thinly veiled excuse for doing Trump’s bidding.
English

Kevin Warsh, the new Fed Chair, just made it clear why rates are going lower:
“AI is going to make almost everything cost less.
We’re at the front end of a productivity boom.
Economic growth won’t be inflationary—we’re in the early innings of a structural decline in prices.”
Elon Musk, Sam Altman, even Stanley Druckenmiller all expect AI to be strongly deflationary.
The next few years are going to be insane.
English

@Cernovich They did the same thing in Texas WITHOUT holding a public vote, is that better or worse?
English

@highbrow_nobrow @Acyn They treat this guy as a genius while he spouts this trite bullshit. How about working on some of today’s issues not something that will impact in 10,000 generations
English

Elon Musk: …Eventually, all life on Earth will be destroyed by the sun. It's gradually expanding, we do at some point have to be a multi-planetary civilization because Earth will be incinerated… @Acyn (2025)

Looks easy.... but it's not. What's the next number?
English

@highbrow_nobrow @Acyn Yeah but, it’s Lindsey Graham so hey, whatever.
English

Lindsey Graham says Trump should have an unconstitutional third term:
“This guy is a cross between PT Barnum and Ronald Reagan. God bless you President Trump… I hope he runs again.” @Acyn (2025)
English

@elonmusk But it was great when Texas did it (without a public vote) as usual your gross hypocrisy shines through
