Early Christians did not have idols, images or icons in the Churches. Romans considered people who did not have visible gods as atheists since Romans had statues of Jupiter, Mars, Diana, Apollo etc all over the Roman Empire. Early Christians practiced Aniconism which rejected any physical depiction (statues or paintings) of the spiritual. While Romans had so many visible gods, Christians didn't even have crosses. So Romans considered Christians as atheists and they persecuted Christians for this reason.
