The only thing worse than attending Dreamforce is taking a red eye back home to the East Coast, where your life that’s bad enough to make Dreamforce look fun awaits you.

Bloke on radio said he asked a German why they were so good at manufacturing. He said "You put your financial people on pedestals. We put our engineers on ours" ... So true.

"Putin in September 2017 said that AI leadership was a means to become “the ruler of the world.” China has vowed to achieve AI dominance by 2030. . . . Meanwhile, much of the top AI talent in the United States is working on things such as ad optimization."

American companies should not build platforms for mass censorship of people and ideas, nor should they directly collaborate with oppressive regimes on products that result in imprisonment of dissidents. theintercept.com/2018/08/01/goo…

Got an exclusive look at a new partnership between the @DefenseDigital Service and the Army that's giving technically skilled soldiers an opportunity to work alongside Silicon Valley talent, building life or death tech. wired.com/story/pentagon…

This post summarizes the biggest success and challenge of modern AI: it's succeeded through unprecedented scale empiricism and statistical correlation. That has massive impacts on what explaining and understanding -- and therefore governing -- these systems can mean. twitter.com/bznotes/status…

Brilliant post by my friend ⁦⁦@nanli⁩ on Modern AI, radical empiricism, and human intelligence. “Artificial Intelligence is now on a diverging path from human intelligence.” worldpositive.com/the-new-intell…

Let me be clear that I like the result & reasoning in #Carpenter. Basically, you can have a legitimate privacy interest in (some) observations about you by a third party. I just think that the logic goes much further than the majority is willing to acknowledge.

Exciting to see progress on UAS flights in the US. Solving the regulatory problems would open up huge new industries in the US, and would really be a shot in the arm for US drone industry. fastcompany.com/40584304/in-a-…

AI+ethics is important, but has been partly hijacked by the AGI (artificial general intelligence) hype. Let's cut out the AGI nonsense and spend more time on the urgent problems: Job loss/stagnant wages, undermining democracy, discrimination/bias, wealth inequality.

Looking forward to how this experiment plays out. Instant runoff voting has a lot of potential to reduce the nastiness in politics — when you want to be the second choice, attacking their first choice isn’t a great idea. Obviously requires more than 2 parties to be effective. twitter.com/politico/statu…

Polls close in an hour in Maine, where they're experimenting with "ranked-choice" voting. Under this system, voters can rank multiple candidates instead of just picking one, which continues until a candidate has reached majority support politi.co/2y3btt6
