I am grateful for what we have and that we can still operate. I’m grateful that good, local people we know buy what we raise, and that I’m able to work the land with my wife, my son, and my Dad. I don’t want subsidies. I’d rather there be no aid, period, because at present my tax dollars give subsidies to my corporate, big Ag competition who already hold monopolies across the board. I do want the government to stop increasing beef and commodity imports to lower prices below production costs. We should be the world’s largest exporter of beef and commodities, not Brazil (whose companies we subsidize). It’s almost comical that the one “subsidy” I applied for a few years ago was a $10,000 greenhouse grant. With Oklahoma winds I spent extra on materials using larger galvanized framing and put it up myself. I put metal 3/4 on the north side to keep north winds at bay and 3ft all along bottom and ends. I spent a bit over 10k and when I submitted all the material receipts a new little hire from the local office came out to inspect. “Wow, that’s a lot sturdier than most I see.” I proudly smiled and nodded, but then he said I had to remove all metal and extra bracing as it was “non compliant.” I said no, keep your money, and not only did they not reimburse but they sent a letter saying my “noncompliance” made me ineligible for other grants. Wasn’t applying for any anyway. Wouldn’t have built it if the grant wasn’t expected … These are the games they play. What little money is there for small operators isn’t there to help, it’s there to control.

Senate leadership sent notice of the DHS bill at 12:55am. Then a voice vote was held at 2:19am. The notice said, “with a substitute amendment” and gave no description of the substitute. The legislative language of the substitute was not sent around to GOP Senate staff. (Idk about Dems.) If you’re a staffer watching your email at that hour (some were!) you had to request the language of the bill. Track down leadership staff to find out how quickly this is moving. Try to read and understand it quickly. Understand how it changed from the original. Get your boss on the phone and explain it. Talk to other staffers to figure out if there’s a coalition to block it — they don’t know — their boss is trying to decide what to do too. Whoops, your one hour is up, the bill is passing and nothing you can do. Purposefully sneaky. They can do this kind of maneuver to not fund immigration enforcement. They would never dream of doing it for your priorities.

If they do neither then we are cooked. It won't just be Thune's fault. It will fall on the heads of ever cowardly senator who refuse to remove him and put in someone who will actually do something. You get that it's not just on Thune, right? If the other senators won't act to stop him, when they can, his inaction is their fault, too.
