PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: This morning I had a pretty serious security incident at my home that I wanted to make everyone aware of, just in case this scam pops up in your area. This morning my perimeter security alarms were tripped by two men who made entry to my property on electric scooters. They were observed talking high-resolution photos of my property, and tampering with my electrical service pole. When confronted, the men refused to identify themselves, and stated that they didn’t even carry their wallets with them. They had ZERO identification papers that they would provide to me. They claimed to work for @gobrightspeed, however when questioned they provided ZERO documentation that they actually worked for that company. They claimed to be a subcontractor for the local power company…but got really shifty and immediately fled when I questioned this and asked for proof that they did work for the power company. They had ZERO identifying uniforms either. Hmm, wherever have I heard of non-uniformed, alleged “subcontractors” for power companies using that fake-claim to gain access to property in North Carolina? Perhaps the Chechen “subcontractor” scandal from last year down in Moore County might ring a bell? And on top of that, they were aggressive and threatening towards me and my family, which has greatly increased my concerns. And before anyone asks, no, calling the police is simply not an option. I live in North Carolina, and my county specifically is legendary for not actually responding to 911 calls, especially those involving theft or trespassing. The first time I called here for trespassing, the deputy laughed in my face and said that I “wasn’t from around here”. When they started sending the 400 pound lesbian deputies out to calls, I stopped calling altogether. My Sheriff’s Department also stopped records of callouts, so I don’t even have case numbers for the majority of times I’ve had to report crimes. Deputies also don’t identify themselves, or provide any record that they were actually called out. When I have attempted to get the police reports for previous callouts to my house (as when property damage occurred), I was told the records don’t exist and that the 911 call center “went to a new database” so there’s not even a record of my 911 calls. And finally, when a shift captain told me over the phone that they would only come out to my property “when someone puts bullets through my door”, that was my last hope for law enforcement enforcing the law in my area. Just wanted to make everyone aware of this risk, and the sly marketing these people use to illegally gain access to your property, all the while acting aggressively and threatening. You are your own first responder, and the options are very limited for what the citizenry can actually do at this point…even in SOLID red, heartland conservative areas sometimes. These are the men that gained access to my property, and refused to identify themselves:

@DewsNewz Just FYI... those people are standing down in the river bed when the video starts. Yes. It doesn't normally flow that high... but historically, floods cover that entire river bottom. Nothing new.

Don't forget, the GhostNet starts in just a few moments! Great time to train, exchange information, or in my case...make sure the "off grid" part actually is feasible. I myself am working through a local power outage in my area, so it's a great time for even me to make sure that if all else fails, contact with the outside world can still be maintained. We've got to take advantage of the minor inconveniences when they come, so that we can start to do the little things right, and have a seamless transition to still having a lot of capabilities...even when a summertime thunderstorm knocks the power out for a bit.

Stayed at a house that was 100 yards from the ocean. The saltwater was an incredible treat to work radio. Main highlight was getting to work my buddy @ScottDWallace #K5SDW on the 17m band while he was flying over St. Thomas island. Really like the new radio/antenna setup.

Just returned home from spending this past week on Galveston Island. I took my new (to me) Chameleon CHA MPAS 2.0 (thx to @K3TripleR) and my Icom IC-705. I experimented and recorded extensive data working the vertical and slope configurations on SSB, CW, and many digital modes.
