Name an album that has nothing but above-average songs. One “skip” track and you’re disqualified. I’ll start:

@Andrewnsnyder It depends on what you’re wanting most from the translation. Singleton for an accurate prose version. Sayers for notes (but NOT text). Mandelbaun for reliable poetry. Pinsky/Merwin for enchanting poetry. Esolen best overall (text+poetry+notes).

@zenahitz Zena, how far should we take this?? E.g. When I teach Plato’s *Republic* my students think differently about Book I when they find out 1) about Plato’s uncle, 2) what he did to Cephalus’ family, 3) the context of the Piraeus or the Bendis Festival.

@Culture_Crit Purgatorio is extraordinary, but describing it as a “self help manual” pretty much misses the point…

Before you can enter Heaven, you must climb Mount Purgatory. It has 7 levels, and you must conquer different sins at each one. This 700-year-old poem guides you up — and it's the greatest self-help manual ever written... (thread) 🧵

Today marks fourteen years since the passing of the great Ralph McInerny, poet, story-teller, and philosopher. For many a model of a Catholic intellectual and magnanimous man.

David Burrell died last week. He was a major contributor to contemporary scholarship on Aquinas, divine action and creation, and the relationship between the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions in philosophy. These are some representative works. RIP.

Alasdair MacIntyre: “Charles De Koninck is the major author of the most important development of Thomism in the twentieth century, often referred to as Laval Thomism. And its greatest exponent after De Koninck himself was the most important philosopher who has ever taught in the Notre Dame philosophy department, Ralph McInerny”

@leachfortexas Well done. But it shouldn’t be just for those who work there. It’s for those serving sentences as well. We show our humanity by how we treat those committed to our care.

Matt - I get the sentiment. But come with me sometime to visit some of these prisons and let’s talk together to the brave Texans who are staffing them — the guards, cooks, wardens and others laboring there — all of whom are under-paid, over-worked and subjected to dangerous and often deplorable working conditions, including the lack of proper air conditioning. Then report back.

Sure you want to put air conditioning in Texas prisons? #txlege

Best classrooms on the planet! Dr. Moore (@ScottHMoore) lecturing on the Pre-Socratic philosophers in Miletus, the birthplace of philosophy, and Dr. Whitlark reading Acts 19 in the theater at Ephesus where the riot against St. Paul occurred. @BearsAbroad @baylor
