@Andrewnsnyder It depends on what you’re wanting most from the translation. Singleton for an accurate prose version. Sayers for notes (but NOT text). Mandelbaun for reliable poetry. Pinsky/Merwin for enchanting poetry. Esolen best overall (text+poetry+notes).

@HenryEOliver @zenahitz Not necessary but sometimes useful (and sometimes distracting). Not an either/or.
English

@catshatecops @zenahitz Jacob Howland’s *Glaucon’s Fate” engages these questions in a thoughtful and persuasive way.
English

@zenahitz Zena, how far should we take this?? E.g. When I teach Plato’s *Republic* my students think differently about Book I when they find out 1) about Plato’s uncle, 2) what he did to Cephalus’ family, 3) the context of the Piraeus or the Bendis Festival.

Another fascinating book from @joellooper and @eerdmansbooks just arrived. I’m looking forward to reading this.

@Culture_Crit Purgatorio is extraordinary, but describing it as a “self help manual” pretty much misses the point…

Really hoping this tweet inspires some kind of Aristotelian revival.
Thomas Chatterton Williams@thomaschattwill
Aristotle, all things considered, is clearly the most impressive human being to have ever lived. (I knew that only a small fraction of his work survived, but I just learned that all of what we have--the foundations of biology, drama, logic--is just his lecture notes for class!)

Alasdair MacIntyre: “Charles De Koninck is the major author of the most important development of Thomism in the twentieth century, often referred to as Laval Thomism. And its greatest exponent after De Koninck himself was the most important philosopher who has ever taught in the Notre Dame philosophy department, Ralph McInerny”

I think this makes my new role at Baylor official. honors.baylor.edu/news/story/202…

@leachfortexas Well done. But it shouldn’t be just for those who work there. It’s for those serving sentences as well. We show our humanity by how we treat those committed to our care.
English

Matt - I get the sentiment.
But come with me sometime to visit some of these prisons and let’s talk together to the brave Texans who are staffing them — the guards, cooks, wardens and others laboring there — all of whom are under-paid, over-worked and subjected to dangerous and often deplorable working conditions, including the lack of proper air conditioning.
Then report back.
Matt Schaefer@RepMattSchaefer
Sure you want to put air conditioning in Texas prisons? #txlege

Best classrooms on the planet! Dr. Moore (@ScottHMoore) lecturing on the Pre-Socratic philosophers in Miletus, the birthplace of philosophy, and Dr. Whitlark reading Acts 19 in the theater at Ephesus where the riot against St. Paul occurred.
