After THE ODYSSEY nabbed a boffo $125 million domestic (biggest non-DEADPOOL R-rated debut) and $264 million worldwide (Nolan’s biggest global bow) weekend, a look at who showed up, what format they chose, what they thought of it and how high it might climb at the box office...

Half the reason so many adults feel nostalgic about college is because it was the only time they lived in highly social, walkable communities where they saw their friends every day, rarely needed cars, and were surrounded by neighborhoods designed to foster connection.

@CoreyAtad Not to go on a tangent, but I’ve long been baffled at folks who trick themselves into thinking a given movie (Precious, The Help, Disclosure Day, etc.) has a far happier ending than it does for just this purpose.

i’ve been noticing a lot of people seem to have missed just how definitively grim the last line of The Odyssey is. have seen more than a few now accuse the movie of suddenly being too hopeful or sentimental in its coda.

They’ve officially released the closing credit sequence from The Odyssey. It’s incredibly powerful to end this cinematic experience on such a thoughtful, emotional tone poem, with Nolan’s relatively more subdued, yet still lovely, visuals backed by Göransson’s ever-amazing music.

- Chris Nolan is Hollywood’s biggest movie star. - Alleged controversies that begin online almost never correlate to real-world interests or opinions. - Attempts at inclusivity won’t always help a film, but they never, ever harm its commercial reception. Thus endeth the lesson.

@ScottMendelson Yea, $120.5 million opening weekend for a combined $257.8 million worldwide is a real loss.

As predicted, the legitimate and very serious controversies over Chris Nolan’s casting of Lupita Nyong’o and Elliot Page in small roles, along with anger over source infidelity and lack of Greek actors, cost ‘The Odyssey’ hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars at the box office...

Nobody talks about how we're all paying $15 for sandwiches now and just pretending that's normal. Five years ago that same sandwich was $8. The price doubled and the only explanation we got was "supply chain issues" which apparently means "forever."

@ScottMendelson Why do you think Minions got a bump instead of just being the best liked of the 3 family movies still in the top of the box office charts and having July 4 weekend go bizarre?

In the holdover news at the Friday box office, Moana and Evil Dead Burn both drowned, Obsession held, The Invite expanded, and we can probably guess on whose side the Minions (which got a bump amid Odyssey drive-in showings) would be during the Trojan war...

@JerryattheMovie @josiepoetess It's sadly a self-sustaining economy at this point. We had a chance in the mid 2010s to nip this in the bud but the media pretended that real people were actually pissed about woman only WONDER WOMAN screenings or lady Ghostbusters.

@josiepoetess @ScottMendelson Eartha Kitt also played Catwoman, and later it was Halle Berry. Don't remember complaints back then. The Internet had made soreness an unlikely virtue.
