If you feel like finding me at the new (for now) "good place"... And if you want to subscribe to my S*bst*ck and/or listen to my weekly podcast, please do that, too. (The extra screenshots are mainly for the clean four photos cropped 16x9 appearance.)

So, #Obsession had an even better second-weekend jump (+30%) than Disney’s 1986 rerelease of ‘Song of the South’!! And... also ‘Titanic’. (It took the 3rd-biggest second-weekend jump ever for any movie opening on more than 2,000 screens but not debuting on or around Christmas)

@EDouglasWW I didn't mean "it should move," I meant "okay, now it's your turn." :-)

@ScottMendelson Backrooms has already sold so many tickets for this weekend, it has no reason to move. Obsession will probably take third place.

Even (or especially?) if it gets crushed by ‘Backrooms,’ ‘Amazing Digital Circus,’ and (unless it skews nostalgic) ‘Scary Movie 6,’ the lesson is clear. If you make cool-looking movies for kids, films that feel of-the-moment, topical & (maybe) a little dangerous, kids show up.

Among films that A) opened on at least 600 screens and B) didn’t open prior to Thanksgiving weekend or days before/on Christmas Day, #Obsession just had the second-best second-weekend hold (behind 1987’s ‘Adventures in Babysitting’). It jumped 39% for a $23.9M Fri-Sun gross.

@therealeverton Yes and no. But I consider films like this akin to Robocop, Terminator 2, Basic Instinct, Sinners, Weapons, Scream, Matrix, Die Hard, Exorcist, etc. “Adult movies” that can be formative cinematic experiences, specifically because a moviegoer saw them when they were young(er).

@ScottMendelson Me again causing trouble. Define "kids". I know Americans tend to call University as school, Uni students kids can't drink till their 21 so perhaps that's what you mean but... Kids? Even with the (weird from an outsiders view) non-barrier R rating this is an "adult" movie, right?

The weekend box office report for The Mandalorian and Grogu will arrive sometime today (at Sea World for my youngest’s 11th birthday). TLDR - $165 million global debut is good enough for a $165 million, kid-friendly flick that should have better legs than the $275 million Solo.

@sperling @FocusFeatures I imagine such conversations are happening at the moment, but it’s not like it’ll get yanked out of theaters once it debuts on PVOD

Focus Features and Blumhouse’s breakout sleeper smash 'Obsession’ earned $22.2M in weekend two for a $55M 10-day total, grossing 30% more in its second weekend than it did in its first ($17.2M). That’s one of the best jumps for any wide release not opening around Christmas. 1/2

@ScottMendelson Also the guy who directed This is Where You Leave Me, and the guy who directed the Ryan Reynolds/Jennifer Garner scene from The Adam Project. I just feel like Levy is a good director, especially with comedy/drama, but he's terrible when he has to make a "commercial" blockbuster.

@therealeverton Totally fair, it just annoys me because that scene becomes what defines it for folks who write the whole thing off.

@ScottMendelson That scene absolutely 100% was in keeping with a film about MMOG environment like Fortnight or even Overwatch. I get why some people feel icky about it, but it's like complaining that a film set in the Egypt has a camel or a pyramid in it. Agreed, Reel Steel guy, yep.

@beneverard @jason_blum Aside from holiday-season releases (around Christmas or Thanksgiving), it had the sixth-best hold among movies opening on 600 screens or more. It’ll have the third-best (maybe second, if the $$ goes up) hold for any 2,000 release not dropped in December.

Obsession is the ONLY wide-release horror film on record to grow in its second weekend at this scale — $22.4M, up 30% over opening. This doesn't happen in horror. Grateful to Focus Features, Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, & Divide/Conquer for championing this movie from the start.

@MaxFromQuebec I saw that film on opening weekend in theaters. While acknowledging its issues before I was even old enough to know how and why, I watched it countless times on video and TV. It was probably a decade before I happened to watch the end credits and notice that credit cookie scene.
