farewell c4 i started contests (and security research) via c4 after coming across trust's interview on andy li when he was #1 on c4 90 day leaderboard earning 90k+. it would have taken me around 9yrs to make this amount with my job then. although i had heard about web3 security jobs being high paying it was tagged as something very advanced requiring years of prior experience and the route there was applying to a company with my cv which only had 4 months of intern work and 4 months of backend dev work. and i knew no one in this field. c4 needed no cv and no connections. everyone read the same codebase, submitted what they found and got paid. and if someone got paid more, i knew why and could learn from their submissions. this opportunity created by c4 changed mine and many others life. i onboarded almost all of my friends, all of whom benefitted from the contest culture started by c4. and the impact of lack of contests now can be clearly felt for newcomers forever grateful, thank you c4

Why SRs are exiting the space? 10+ auditors I personally know have exited the space in the last few months. Some switched to ecom. Some to marketing or sales. Some to AI projects. Some just stopped posting and disappeared. Why? Yesterday, @code4rena shut down - the platform that kickstarted this entire era of competitive auditing. And honestly, the contest model has been slowly dying for over a year. Most remaining platforms barely run serious contests anymore. The biggest consequence? The entire entry path for new researchers is collapsing. Mid-level and newer auditors can’t find work. Over the past months, dozens have reached out to me offering to audit for free just to get experience. And the reason is always the same: - No engagements for 1–2 months. - No clear path forward. - No realistic way to compete with established names already embedded with top protocols. But the real problem is deeper than employment. No new researchers means no new ways of thinking. The same small group of auditors keeps reviewing the same codebases with the same mental models. And new exploit classes rarely come from repetition - they come from fresh perspectives noticing things everyone else overlooked. That pipeline is slowly being cut off. Soon, breaking into smart contract security won’t just be difficult - it’ll be nearly impossible.
