I wish Marxists would stop pushing atheism as “superior,” as if Christians (or Muslims, etc.) are incapable of analysis beyond “because God” or w/e I don’t ask God, “how do I build revolution.” For the same reason that I don’t ask Marx, “how do I be more kind to myself.”

this is nothing new. it’s exactly the same as what happened in weimar germany. liberalism cannot meet the demands of the people because it tries & inevitably fails to straddle the widening contradictions in capitalism. this allows fascists to divert attention onto easy targets.

You've doubtless read the numerous headlines these past few days on how Xi Jinping called for the Yuan to "become a global reserve currency." That's true, he actually said that. But, as is often the case, Western media are missing the forest for the trees. This is extracted

@CanadaDry42 That's just the market correcting itself, then. It's a temporary deviation that meat is so cheap—just like how clothing is underpriced because fast fashion relies on the underpaid labor of poor countries.

@SelekediM Do you know wha propaganda is? Genuinely, take a moment and think back, tell me where you heard that it’s “dark at night over there.” How is it that this “fact” has ever been brought to your attention. Now tell me that that source was not at all propaganda.

One of the funniest things about being a communist is how liberals and conservatives will parrot the same propaganda like they are sharing some little known piece of information. "Yeah man I'm a communist" "Bro, did you know Stalin ate all the grain in Ukraine?"

@CrippledOjisan There’s a difference between building yourself up and tearing others down. The world is not so black and white that a place as big as China may entirely engage in one without the other, but whichever one is primary determines the outcome. Hence China builds EVs, US builds bombs.

This is actually from a speech Xi made in January 2013 at the Central Party School, made public by Qiushi in 2019 (qstheory.cn/dukan/qs/2019-…) It's interesting to look at Xi's arguments for why it is "completely wrong" to say that China is not socialist. In short he says that socialism is defined by who holds power and for what purpose, not by specific economic mechanisms. What determines China's nature is the political architecture and the ideological commitments, namely common prosperity as the near-term objective, full-fledged communism as the ultimate (if very distant) destination, and public ownership remaining the mainstay of the economy. As such, as he explains, using market mechanisms is entirely consistent with socialism as long as it is but an engine as opposed to being the driver. The market - capital - doesn't determine where China is going, it just helps develop productive forces to sustain China on its socialist path. The most interesting aspect of the speech is his emphasis on the dangerousness of the notion that China may not be socialist. He goes as far as saying it could lead to the collapse of the state itself. He quotes an ancient saying - "To destroy a country, first destroy its history" (灭人之国,必先去其史) - and says that's what happened in the Soviet Union: "Why did the Soviet Union disintegrate? Why did the Soviet Communist Party collapse? An important reason was that the struggle in the ideological sphere was extremely intense - they completely negated Soviet history and CPSU history, negated Lenin, negated Stalin, engaged in historical nihilism. Thinking was thrown into chaos, Party organizations at all levels had almost no function anymore, the military was no longer under Party leadership. In the end, the Soviet Communist Party - such a great party - scattered like birds and beasts, and the Soviet Union - such a great socialist country - fell apart. This is a cautionary tale!" This is particularly interesting because it somewhat negates Marx's historical materialism which says that material conditions determine the ideological superstructure. Xi here is arguing the reverse: that the Soviet Union collapsed because it lost its ideological coherence first, it stopped believing in itself. In other words, spirit precedes matter, a state needs a substantive answer to "what are we for?". That sort of thinking is arguably coming from the "Chinese characteristics" aspect of "socialism with Chinese characteristics" as it's very Confucian to believe that political order rests on moral legitimacy and shared belief. A state that loses the "Mandate of Heaven" - its animating purpose and the people's belief in that purpose - will collapse regardless of how powerful it appears materially. These notions also apply, in reverse, to the West: we are living in a period of deep nihilism. What's the political vision for the West besides mere (and often incompetent) economic management? One cannot hold a community together with consumption, there's no meaning there. Hence people reaching for populists selling all sorts flawed visions, often based on scapegoating. It's all the fault of - take your pick: the immigrants, the rich, the woke, China, each other, etc. But "who are we against?" and resentment aren't a constructive vision, and history has taught us that if it ever becomes one, that path leads somewhere very dark. The right question to ask is "what are we for?".
