There’s a fantastic moment in Terry Pratchett’s Hogfather where a woman asks Death what is the purpose of fantasy, and Death replies, “HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE RISING ANGEL MEETS THE FALLING APE.” Fiction is not frivolous, it’s essential.
