From new work published today in Economic History Review. Irish GDP (1924-47) amalgamated with the first official NIE estimates.

A new working paper constructing Quarterly GDP for Ireland since 1950 (from @reb_stuart and I). We join these with the first official numbers (1995). The 50s + 80s look even worse, and the 90s show up as a distinctive break after a rocky start. quceh.org.uk/uploads/1/0/5/…

Considering the extent of international inter/intra war "instability" facing Ireland's early prospects (1924-47), the decades of the 1950s and 1980s might warrant a lower economic performance grade than the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.

New working paper announcement! Ever wondered why Irish is such an endangered language? Joint work with Alan Fernihough and Eoin McLaughlin (@eoinaldo) crunches the numbers. We argue language loss was driven by endogenous demand for English, not exogenous policy imposition.

@jlpobrien Thanks John! As I write in paper, the caveat is that 1920s are likely flattered by not including starting years 1920-3 (deep contraction). 1930s appear bleaker due to end year (WW2) of decade.

The Irish Free State had a lower GDP per capita at independence than previously estimated (e.g. Maddison Project), according to Sean Kenny's new research: ceph.ie/article-re/iri…

If I had one piece of advice for any PhD students, it’s to take advantage of summer schools like this I did a couple over my PhD. They make such a difference and are a great networking opportunity as well!
